Jane Austen's Ring

Jane Austen's Ring

Did you catch the recent sale of Jane Austen’s gold and gem set ring to American Kelly Clarkson?  Well, I nearly missed it but many did not.

Apparently, Clarkson bid on and won the ring at a Sotheby’s auction for just under $246,000. However, historical interests in England spoke up and asked to have the sale blocked in an effort to keep an important part of history in the country. The British government agreed and placed a temporary ban on the export of the ring in an effort to give British concerns time to come up with the purchase price.

It took a month but Jane Austen’s ring will be staying in England at Jane Austen’s House Museum.

My local newspaper says the ring was bequeathed to Austen’s sister Cassandra and that it stayed in the family until the auction. The newspaper also said that Clarkson is happy to relinquish the ring to the museum because so many fans will be able to see it.

Rush: The Best Car-Racing Movie Ever?

Rush: The Best Car-Racing Movie Ever?

Earlier this week when I asked my husband what he wanted to do for fun this weekend, he said one word and that word was "Rush."  I knew he was interested in this movie but he is interested in every car movie except perhaps Disney's Car movies.

Then I read this morning's Ottawa Citizen in which Jay Stone's headline screams: "Feeling the RUSH. Ron Howard's electrifying car-racing film might just be the best one ever made."

And then I saw the trailer...

And then I became interested in seeing Rush.

As the tagline says, Rush is based on a true story. Set in the 1970s, it is the story of Formula One drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda. The movie is directed by Ron Howard and stars Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Bruhl and Olivia Wilde.

Driving.ca says that “some liberties were taken…but by and large what you see is how it was four decades ago between the two drivers…that it is an accurate portrayal of the men’s complicated relationship.”

It looks like Rush is an action movie with a moving story, too.

Is Rush on your radar? If it is be sure to come back and let us know if you think Rush is the best car-racing movie ever.

Cher's Closer to the Truth (2013)

Cher has a new album set to be released on September 24, 2013 called Closer to the Truth.

I will admit that I have enjoyed Cher and followed her professional life since the Sonny and Cher show in the 1970s though I was but a young girl at that time.

As a long time fan, I am glad to see that at the age of 67 Cher is still belting out tunes. I love the fact that she is still performing though I doubt I will ever see her in concert again and yes, I love the the new song Woman's World and the accompanying music video, too.

Watch the official Youtube video for Woman's World right here and see for yourself.  Then be sure to let us know if you love Cher, too!

As always, Cher demonstrates her over-the-top fashion sensibilities.

Upstairs Downstairs (2011) Period Drama

As a fan of period drama movies, I’m always on the lookout for more good programs. This past week, I discovered Upstairs Downstairs (2011) and just now discovered that it is a continuation of the 1970s TV series, which I have not watched.

I enjoyed this newer version of Upstairs Downstairs, even without having seen the original programs. It was an entertaining look into the life of the aristocrats and the servants of 1936 England and consists of three one-hour episodes.

I’m sure that if you enjoy period dramas like Downton Abbey and you are looking for more similar programs, that you will enjoy this one. Take a peek at the trailer:

Personally, I’ll be looking for the original series, which ran from 1971 to 1975 and which I see is available in a boxed set called Upstairs, Downstairs: The Complete Series.
