The Hallmark Hall of Fame movie A Smile As Big As The Moon is a touching movie possibly maybe even better when you consider that the events portrayed within it are based on real people and actual events.

A group of teenage high school students enrolled in a special education class who experience a variety of issues like Down syndrome, Tourette’s, learning disabilities and emotional problems, learn to work as a team and have the opportunity to attend Space Camp.

Based on a book of the same name written by Mike Kersjes and Joe Layden, I am pleased to be able to HIGHLY RECOMMEND A Smile As Big As The Moon for anyone who cheers for the underdog and who admires perseverance, determination and hard work.

This is the kind of movie that Hallmark does better than anyone and one of the best movies I have seen in awhile. A Smile As Big As The Moon has ALL THE RIGHT STUFF.

Hallmark Hall of Fame's A Smile As Big As The Moon Movie (2012)

Heads up Hallmark movie fans. There's a new movie being broadcast this month from Hallmark Hall of Fame called A Smile As Big As The Moon.

The film is based on the true story of a special education teacher working to help a class of special education students achieve the impossible dream of going to NASA's Space Camp and is based on a book written by Mike Kersjes and Joe Layden.

What's extra special about this Hallmark Hall of Fame presentation is the fact that Hallmark is broadcasting it on ABC rather than the Hallmark Channel, which means that people like you and I who do not receive the Hallmark Channel will be able to see A Smile As Big As The Moon when it premieres on Sunday, January 29, 2012.

The cast stars John Corbett, Jessy Schram, and Cynthia Watros.

Lovely, Still (2010) Movie Review

Two well-respected actors that you will probably recognize, Martin Landau (82) and Ellen Burstyn (77), appear in the movie Lovely, Still. It's the first feature film of 23-year-old named Nik Fackler and it's extremely well done.

Lovely, Still is a love story, an usual love story for sure. It shares the romance between two individuals late in life and it takes you on a romantic journey like none you have never experienced before.

Critics call Lovely, Still an impressive debut by Fackler and the L.A. Times says that he is "sensitively attuned to his actors and deeply committed to examining the dilemmas inherent in aging." If this movie is a representation of that commitment, then I agree.

Lovely, Still is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for anyone looking for a sweet, romantic film. It has a wonderful magical, fairytale quality, although this movie is not all rosy. It is masterfully done though and not quite exactly what it appears to be. You will be thinking about it for days...

Daniel Radcliffe Co-hosts Live With Kelly

I am always excited when there's something of special interest to watch on television and it's actually available on a channel that we receive.

In this case, the excitement is around Daniel Radcliffe. Fans will want to mark their calendars for January 31, 2012, when Radcliff will appear as a co-host on Live with Kelly, the daytime talk show on ABC. This is the show that originally was Live with Regis and Kelly. The new show features a series of guest hosts, of which Radcliffe is one.

I expect on this show we'll learn lots about Radcliffe's new movie The Woman in Black, which will be released in movie theatres on February 10, 2012.

Disneynature's Chimpanzee (2012) Documentary Trailer

The trailer is out for Disneynature's upcoming Earth Day nature documentary film called Chimpanzee.

Chimpanzee tells the story of an orphaned chimp in the forests of Africa. It is, I believe, the first Disney Nature film to tell a story and it looks like a cute film.

The Obama's Alice in Wonderland White House Halloween Party

File this post under GOSSIP. I'm not usually interested in American politics (because I am a Canadian) but when Johnny Depp enters the picture, I become curious.

According to this morning's newspaper, Tim Burton and Johnny Depp were amongst those involved in a special Alice in Wonderland themed Halloween party thrown by the White House in 2009.

Johnny Depp appeared in the costume that he wore as the Mad Hatter in the movie Alice in Wonderland.

Tim Burton was responsible for the dining room, which was decorated in true Mad Hatter style.

Chewbacca of Star Wars fame made a special appearance as well.

The event was attended by both Malia and Sasha Obama, their friends, children of the White House staff and of military families.

The newspaper said that the White House did not allow the press to report on the party for fear of how such a splashy Hollywood style party would look to those Americans struggling to find jobs and put food on the table for their families.

According to sources online, the upcoming biography, The Obamas, by Jodi Kantor claims that the trick-or-treating event was publicized and that the Alice in Wonderland party was not.

The White House, however, is denying that they tried to keep the party quiet saying that they invited the press corps, that there were pictures posted on Flickr, as well as a video on the White House site and that the event was even talked about on Johnny Depp's website.

Curious and curiouser! It must have been quite a party one about which we may never know the truth...but we surely recognize a good story when we see one. Would you like to have Johnny Depp make an appearance at YOUR Alice in Wonderland Party? I would!

Hunger Blu-ray Movie Review & Trailer

Hunger is based on a true story that took place in 1981 in Northern Ireland's prison, Maze where inmate Bobby Sands went on a hunger strike, protesting the fact that the government refused to see him and other IRA inmates as political prisoners. Amazon summed up this movie very nicely when they said, "McQueen dramatizes prison existence and Sands' final days in a way that is purely experiential, even abstract, a succession of images full of both beauty and horror."

There are a number of Amazon customer reviews of interest for Hunger, including this one by Nathan Andersen. "Apart from being overwhelmed by the intensity and importance of the subject matter...I was stunned by the power of the filmmaking. This is one of the most impressive directorial efforts I've seen in a long time, and an amazing debut by Steve McQueen, and I expect it will be recognized as one of the most important films of this decade by the film historians who care about substance and style over commercialism and buzz. This is definitely one to have for the library of the film lover who likes to study films; there's a lot to learn here."

With regard to the quality of the blu-ray release, Blu-ray.com does an indepth review of Hunger and calls the blu-ray transfer impressive and calls the blu-ray disc VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

High-Def Digest says that this is a hard-to-watch movie but that it is an important one with some moving acting. The movie is recommended on its own merits and the blu-ray transfer is well done, too. They call it a no-brainer, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Finally, DVD Talk says that this is an unsettling film and a moving experience, one that should be seen. The blu-ray, they say is as good as the movie, with a "spectacular high definition presentation and an equally effective master-quality soundtrack."

Hunger was on the list of best blu-ray movies of 2010 and obviously, would make an excellent addition to your blu-ray movie collection.

You Will Love The New Muppets Movie Soundtrack (2011)

We saw The Muppets Movie shortly after it was released on November 23, 2011 and thoroughly enjoyed it. As a matter of fact, it was so much fun that I almost found myself singing along with The Muppets and I am sure I was not the only one.

The soundtrack includes remakes of old Muppet favorites like the Muppet Theme Song, Rainbow Connection (The Moopets version) and Mah Na Mah Na as well as numerous songs that are new including Man or Muppet, Life's A Happy Song and Me Party, a duet by Miss Piggy and Amy Adams.

Here's the official trailer for the soundtrack, which is about 7 minutes long and not really much of an ad for the soundtrack, if you want my humble opinion because the music in the movie was so good and the trailer, not so good.

Trailer aside, this is the one album that I would love to be given at Christmas. It is, of course available from Amazon on CD or as an MP3 download.

Four Christmases Movie Review

I pulled Four Christmases down from the shelf when I was looking for a Christmas-themed movie for my 19 year old son to watch with me. He really was not keen on a Christmas movie so it had to be something funny and Four Christmases it was.

Four Christmases is a humorous Christmas movie from 2008 that stars Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon. It tells the story of a young couple that is forced to stay home from a tropical vacation and visit their parents, all four sets of them.

It was funny and I loved the cameo appearances by many well known older actors like Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek Jon Voight and Mary Steenburgen. The critics were not kind to Four Christmases but I enjoyed the film and I laughed outloud. Sometimes a little laughter is a good thing.

Be warned that, as is obvious in the official movie trailer, this is NOT a family Christmas movie. It has enough sexual references and crude language to make many people (myself included) uncomfortable. The opening sexual scene had me wondering what I had gotten into in selecting this movie. I checked the box and saw that it is rated PG-13. (I thought it might have been rated R.)

In the end, I enjoyed Four Christmases and I would recommend it to people who want a light comedic movie with the caution about the content making it inappropriate for viewing with young people. Next time, I think I will look for a Christmas comedy aimed at families.

The second of two collections, Hallmark Hall of Fame Timeless Treasures delivers three more of the best Hallmark movies. This triple feature set is being offered on a 'limited time' basis and includes The Magic of Ordinary Days, Sarah Plain and Tall and What the Deaf Man Heard. I have seen and enjoyed all of these movies.

It is worth noting that What The Deaf Man Heard earned a place on my page about The Best Hallmark Movies Ever.

The Magic of Ordinary Days and Sarah Plain and Tall are both also well loved Hallmark movies.

I aplaud Hallmark's choice of movies in this triple feature. Anyone who loves Hallmark films will appreciate this collection.

Hallmark Hall of Fame movies are, in my opinion, the best of the Hallmark movies so it is very interesting and definitely very well timed that Hallmark is offering for a limited time two Triple Feature Collections.

This set is the Hallmark Hall of Fame Christmas Collection. It includes thee fantastic Christmas-themed movies: A Dog Named Christmas, November Christmas and A Season For Miracles. The first two I have seen and loved. The last I have yet to see but A Season For Miracles has only perfect five-star reviews from the customers on Amazon.

W Network Airs Hallmark Christmas Movies (2011)

A kindly reader pointed out that some of the Hallmark Christmas movies are available in Canada between now and Christmas on the W Network. Thank you, thank you, thank you to that friend. I would have totally missed this opportunity if she had not pointed it out.

I am particularly looking forward to two of The Good Witch movies - The Good Witch's Gift and The Good Witch's Family - as I have not had a chance to see any of this movie series. Both of them air on Tuesday, December 6, 2011.

When Love is Not Enough - The Lois Wilson Story is the story of the couple who started AA. I have seen it and can recommend it though I really don't think of it as a Christmas movie. When Love is Not Enough airs on Wednesday, December 7, 2011.

Lucky Christmas, a new 2011 Hallmark Christmas movie, airs on Monday December 12. It tells the story of a single mom whose car is stolen, complete with her winning lottery ticket. It is one of the few new 2011 Hallmark movies in the W Network movie line-up.

Finally, I see Christmas in Canaan, the 2009 movie starring Billy Ray Cyrus, which is being followed this year by Return to Canaan and I see that Night Before the Night Before Christmas airs on Wednesday December 14, 2011.

This short post is just my attempt to let you know that you can tune into some great Hallmark Christmas movies on the W Network. (It is not a complete list.) If you are interested, check your tv guide every day in order to determine what Christmas Hallmark films are on the W Channel schedule.

Jessica Tandy's The Christmas Story Lady Movie Review

If there is nothing you love better than cuddling up with a good book and your children, you are bound to love this Christmas movie, The Christmas Story Lady.

The story is that of a Grandmother who has to give up her own home and move in with her daughter. Needing a purpose in life, she approaches many local institutions in search of a volunteer job.

She eventually stumbles across a public television studio that will allow her to tape her own television show and so she creates 'The Christmas Story Lady' on which she shares her favorite children's stories. When her show catches the eye of a television executive, it no longer is a simple little show produced by a sweet lady and, of course, it grows out of control.

I enjoyed this family friendly film, which stars Jessica Tandy, Ed Begley Jr., and Stephanie Zimbalist. It was a made-for-television movie in 1991 and it is a wholesome movie, like the Anne of Green Gables series, and one I can wholeheartedly recommend for the entire family.

Meet Walter, The Newest Muppet Character, and Check Out His Kermit The Frog Wrist Watch

The new Muppet movie, Green With Envy, was amazing but more about that later. Right now, I want to introduce you to Walter, the newest Muppet Character.

Walter is a quiet guy, sweet but lacking in confidence, perhaps because he has never quite fit into the human world.

Walter has a wonderful and very supportive older brother named Gary. (Played by Jason Segal.) Gary has always been there for Walter, as big brothers often are.

Walter is, as might not be surprising given the fact that we are talking about a Muppet movie, a HUGE fan of Kermit The Frog because he somehow manages to relate to him. When offered the chance to visit Los Angeles, he is delighted because he will finally be able to visit the Muppet Studios.

While in LA. it becomes clear that Walter, his brother Gary and his partner, Mary (played by Amy Adams) are going to have to help save the studios from imminent desctruction and to do so, they must enlist Walter's hero, Kermit the Frog.

Walter is such a huge fan of Kermit that he wears Kermit on his clothing and even on his wrist. He even takes a moment in the movie to point out that he wears Kermit's image on his watch.

An Elf's Story Review: The Elf on the Shelf DVD & Gift Set

Usually I manage to miss new shows on television. However, thanks to a review in the New York Times about the new Christmas television shows for 2012, I actually knew about and remembered to watch An Elf's Story, the new Elf on the Shelf television program.

Long ago, a friend named Joan introduced me to the Elf on the Shelf via her page The Elf on the Shelf, A Family Tradition and what a beautiful tradition it is.

And the new television show, entitled An Elf's Story was sweet, telling as it did of one little boy's loss of faith in Christmas and how one little Elf on the Shelf named Chippey was able to help the boy renew his faith.

There were a few problems with watching An Elf's Story on television and the first you all know and, if you are like me, dread. That is the commercials. Aghh, just get on with the story, I thought.

The second was ABC's insistence at having their television logo in the bottom righthand corner of the screen throughout the ENTIRE show. It managed to detract from the lovely winter scenes.

Finally, ABC insisted on reminding us a couple of times during the show that Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer would be airing on Tuesday night. Granted, I could use the reminder but what they really reminded me was that it is better to have the DVD than to endure watching Rudolph (or An Elf's Story) on network television...

J.K. Rowling Speaks Out Against The Tabloid Frenzy At The Public Inquiry

North Americans are familiar with the hounding of the famous by the press but nothing was more extreme than the hounding Princess Diana received in the United Kingdom. I have no idea if that situation has anything to do with the current inquiry into the standards of the British media or not but we all are aware that the media continues to harass celebrities in the U.K. and elsewhere.

J.K. Rowling spoke out about the tabloids during her appearance at the public inquiry yesterday. She says that she worked hard to shield her family from the press but that her best efforts were not enough to protect them and, at one point, the media's attention was so intense that she was forced to move to a new home.

With regard to the intrusion upon the privacy of her family, Rowling said, "A child, no matter who their parents are, deserves privacy." I am inclined to agree. What do you think? Does the fact that J.K. Rowling is recognized around the world mean that the press should have access to her doings? To the activities of her family? To the lives of her children?

I said it last year and I'll say it again this year...WOW -- Have you seen the new Johnny Depp 2012 calendar? If you love Johnny Depp and you need a calendar (and who doesn't) consider giving Johnny a glance. This calendar is definitely my favorite.

New Family Movies November (2011)

What an exciting moment in the movie world. Not one but rather three family friendly movies have opened recently at the movie theatre.

The first one is one that I have been looking forward to for months -- The Muppet's new movie, Green With Envy. The others, Hugo and Arthur Christmas, I had not been paying much attention, too. Hugo I had seen what seemed like a long time ago in a trailer and mostly forgot about and Arthur Christmas I had dismissed because, well, it just seemed like yet another animated Christmas movie. Then at breakfast time on November 23, I pulled open the newspaper and was surprised when I finished reading the entertainment section that I was sold by good reviews of all three.

My local newspaper, The Ottawa Citizen, calls Arthur Christmas a "brilliant animated film that brings a wildly original spin to a Christmas tale." The story is that of a present that is not delivered and Santa's inept son Arthur who refuses to accept that it will not be delivered. Critic Jay Stone gave the movie the best rating of the day at four stars. Take a look via the official movie trailer:

Green With Envy also received a very solid review, a very respectable 3.5 stars and reviewer Katherine Monk says that Jason Segel has "successfully resurrected the Muppets" who have been tucked away at Disney for the last ten years. Monk says that the story "affirms the importance of a good attitude and a loving heart." I am pleased that The Muppets are back in such a successful fashion.

Finally, there's Hugo, a Martin Scorsese 3D film called "a delightful celebration of the movies." Critic Roger Moore says that this movie is particularly of interest to grown up movie fans because of its references to movie making. The boy in this story lives in a Paris train station during a period of time between the two world wars. He's an orphan who looks after the clocks. Moore gave Hugo a good review and a score of 3.5 stars.

Hugo, by the way, is based on Brian Seznick's book The Invention of Hugo Cabret.

Now I have a dilemma. Which movie to see? I expect it will be the Muppets who have had a place in my heart since I was a girl. How about you, which of these movies stands out for you?

The Red Shoes Blu-ray Movie Review

The Red Shoes is a 1948 technicolor musical set in the south of France, which features Oscar-winning sets and music, amazing performances and cinematography. Hallmark's Trading Christmas (2011) Movie

In Debbie Macomber's Trading Christmas book four strangers discover the magic of Christmas. I read and enjoyed the book recently, it is a light, funny Christmas story in which four strangers trade houses, towns and christmas, and and I am thrilled to say that the trailer for Hallmark's new 2011 movie Trading Christmas looks like it could live up to the novel.

What do you think? Looks like fun, I would say. Trading Christmas airs on the Hallmark Channel on Sunday, November 26, 2011, so, if you receive the Hallmark Channel, you will want to mark your calendar with that date. If, like me, you do not receive the Hallmark Channel, you will have to wait and see if this is one of the few new Hallmark movies that will be released on DVD this year. If I figure it out, I will be sure to come back and tell you here.

Meanwhile, I can HIGHLY RECOMMEND the book, to anyone who enjoys Hallmark movies. I think it would make a great Christmas gift item, too bad we cannot at this point pair it with a copy of the movie.

Hallmark's A Christmas Wedding Tail (2011) Movie DVD

I know, I know it isn't even Thanksgiving Day yet in the United States but I just had to share the news about this new Hallmark Christmas movie, A Christmas Wedding Tail, with you right away because it airs this weekend, on Saturday, November 19, 2011. Of course, it airs on the Hallmark Channel so I won't be able to watch it right away but I was excited to discover that Hallmark is going to be releasing the DVD on December 6, 2011.

Here's a peek at this new movie, via the official movie trailer, which stars Jennie Garth, Brad Rowe, Tom Arnold, Jay Mohr and Nikki Cox. I will look forward to seeing Jennie Garth again because I was a loyal Beverly Hills 90201 watcher a few years ago...

Michael Jackson's Cirque du Soleil Immortal World Tour (2011)

Foolish me, I did not buy tickets to see Michael Jackson's Cirque du Soleil Immortal World Tour when it was in Ottawa a couple of weeks ago. If I had been able to see this video then, I would probably have chosen to go and of course, since I love Michael Jackson, I cannot help asking myself why I did not buy tickets because it turns out I missed a spectacular event.

Anyway, in case you are unsure of what to expect from this collaboration, I would like to share a video look into what the Cirque du Soleil put together in the form of Michael Jackson's Immortal World Tour.

A friend who attended the Ottawa Cirque du Soleil event said that it was just like being at a Michael Jackson concert, with perhaps only Michael missing.

The local newspaper, the Ottawa Citizen, said, "My guess is that Michael Jackson would approve."

Nice to know that, as is typical with Cirque, there is an album available called simply, Michael Jackson's Immortal. It contains 40 of Michael Jackson's songs, reworked for the performance, and it will be released on November 21, 2011. You can pre-order it from Amazon by clicking right here.

The Thin Red Line Blu-ray Movie Review

The Thin Red Line is a Terrence Malick movie that was produced in 1998. It is an adaptation of the 1962 book by James Jones about the WWII battle for Guadalcanal. It was a big-budget movie but also a philosophical one starring Sean Penn, Nick Nolte, Elias Koteas, Woody Harrelson, Adrian Brody, George Clooney and John Cusack. Some consider it to be one of the best war movies.

Amazon customer D. Litton said, "Even those not partial to war films may favor the grandeur and spectacle of The Thin Red Line. A stirring war epic and an intense journey into the mind are swirled into an engrossing movie that tugs at the heartstrings with such a grip you have no choice but to go along with it."

The blu-ray release? Well, it was one of the best blu-ray movie releases of 2010.

DVD Talk praised the blu-ray disc saying that it was jaw-dropping and had great technical qualities.

Blu-ray.com said that the film has been reproduced extremely well on blu-ray disc and that it has great new special features. They declared it VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Finally, DVD Verdict says that Criterion did a very good blu-ray release and that it is "almost certainly their pick for Blu-ray of the year."

Sesame Street 20 Years and Still Counting is a short and sweet peek into the history of a television show that is and has been watched around the world. Hosted by Bill Cosby and guest starring Kermit the Frog, this show will take you back to the years when you watched Sesame Street and at the same time give you a bit of background information about why Sesame Street was created.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. I laughed and I cried and I and was disappointed when it was over. I remember watching Sesame Street extensively when I was young. I remember watching it, too, when I was a bit older but I did not know until today that Sesame Street was written to appeal to adults and children because the producers wanted parents to watch the program with their little ones.

If you were or are a fan of Sesame Street, I highly recommend this DVD.

If you know someone who has fond memories of the program and the gang, this would be an excellent and inexpensive gift idea.

Johnny Depp in The Man Who Cried (2001) Movie Review

The Man Who Cried is a 2001 film with an all-star cast that includes Christina Ricci, Cate Blanchett, John Turturro and Johnny Depp. If you enjoy Johnny Depp, you will definitely want to see this movie, even though he is not the main character. He may not have been the main character but he was definitely unforgettable in this bittersweet film and I thought he even came close to stealing the show.

The Man Who Cried starts out in 1927 in a small Russian village with a young girl who becomes separated from her family and winds up raised in England by an English family. As a singer and dancer, she winds up in living in Paris where she is increasingly unsafe as the Nazi Germans gain strength.

Throw into the story an unscrupulous operatic tenor, a cabaret dancer and a mysterious gypsy stranger and you have a beautifully done movie, an “alluring tale of passion, intrigue and betrayal.”

I loved it, though I see by the mixed Amazon customer reviews that this movie is not for everyone. If you love Johnny Depp and you enjoy romantic movies with a historic bent, you should enjoy The Man Who Cried.

I watched it on an old VHS tape and wished for better because the film was beautiful and I found myself imagining how lovely it would be if it were cleaned up on blu-ray disc. However, it turns out that The Man Who Cried is not available on blu-ray. It is, of course, available on DVD.

Zombieland Movie Review

The days when I used to watch Stephen King horror movies have passed. No longer am I a fan of horror movies. However, I recently watched Zombieland because I was the only one in my family who did not want to watch it on movie night. (Having a family of males in their late teens will do this to you.)
Imagine then, my surprise when I enjoyed Zombieland and I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Yes, I cringed at all of the blood and gore. Don't forget that Zombies do eat brains.

What I wasn't expecting was to laugh and to laugh quite a bit. I expect the combination of horror and humour is partly responsible for the somewhat surprising popularity of this movie.

In terms of the blu-ray disc, Blu-ray.com says that the blu-ray version "excels in every area" and that it has amazing picture quality, an impressive soundtrack and lots of 'ooey-gooey' extras. They rate it HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for every blu-ray movie collection. I’d temper that with the thought that Zombieland is not a movie for everyone but if this is your genre, or if you are willing to live with the blood and gore, then you should add this movie to your collection.

Zombieland T.V. Show

Interesting news in yesterday's newspaper and that was that the movie Zombieland is going to be made into a television series. My almost adult son was thrilled that this would mean TWO zombie t.v. series.

Apparently, Zombieland was originally meant to be a t.v. show but somewhere along the line it became a movie and when it became a movie, some of the interesting ideas were discarded like the Zombie Kill of the Week. There really was supposed to be a Zombie Kill of the Week each and every week.

The new series, which has not actually been confirmed, would feature a half-hour episode each week and would be released in the 2012-2013 television season.

Jesse Eisenberg and Emma Stone, two of the original stars will not be a part of the television series.

Just Like Dad Movie Review

Just Like Dad is a 1995 Feature Film for Familes. It's a simple story of a boy who hurts his dad while trying to figure out how to become more popular with the students at his new school. He learns that although his father is not a big strong guy physically, he has other strengths.

Just Like Dad stars Wallace Shawn, Ben Diskin and Nick Cassavetes. You will probably recognize Wallace Shawn who plays the father. His resume is extensive and includes The Princess Bride, You might also recognize Nick Cassavetes from movies like My Sister's Keeper and The Notebook.

The child star of this movie is Ben Diskin, who no doubt has grown up since he made this movie. I see his more recent works includes voicing for video games and the television show, The Spectacular Spider-Man.

Feature Films for Familes are great safe movie choices if you have children in your home. I like the questions that come on the case, to help generate conversation AFTER you watch the movie.

The Trip (2011) Movie Review

Last night I was left on my own by my family so I pulled a lesser known movie, a British comedy, called The Trip from the shelf. If you have not heard of The Trip, you are to be excused for I had not either.

As a matter of fact, I am not familiar with the actors in this movie -- Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon who, according to the case, play loose versions of themselves. I was, therefore, really surprised to discover a boxed DVD set called,The Steve Coogan Collection, but I digress.

The Trip promises to be interesting on a couple of fronts. First, it is a FOOD movie with two non-foodies sent forth as restaurant critics...and who doesn't love food? Second, it is a TRAVEL movie with these friends travelling to fine restaurants throughout the remote countryside of England.

The tag line, "Eat, drink and try not to kill each other" was apt. Throw any two people together in a moving vehicle for many hours and all will not likely go smoothly. However, it is the continual banter, both when they were arguing and when they were getting along, that kept me watching this film. Well, that and the beautiful geography and the gourmet food offered up, albeit some 'ordinary' food would have been nice, too. One of the best moments in my humble opinion (at least with regard to food) was the sunny day in England when they were able to sit outside and have a fried breakfast...

Did I say it was funny? It was, with Coogan and Brydon spending the entire trip doing impressions of Anthony Hopkins, Al Pacino, Sean Connery and Michael Caine, bickering and entertaining themselves as they went. As reflected in the Amazon customer reviews, Fans of this duo and their prior works really enjoyed the movie. Take a peek for yourself:

Love The Muppets? If you do, you will enjoy this video that they just released at the movie theatres about proper movie theatre etiquette although I'm pretty certain that a true movie lover like you would NEVER text or talk in the theatre, which is the purpose of this video.

AMC Theatres and Sprint encourage you to "Resist the Urge. Don't Text or Talk in the Movie Theatre."

Honestly, I cannot remember having experienced either of these issues when I have been at the movie theatre. How about you? Have you been at a movie theatre when someone was using their electronic device? What did you do? What did you think?

Elizabeth Taylor Auction

The Collection of Elizabeth Taylor is a celebration of the life and times of Elizabeth Taylor hosted by Christies’ auction house. It began on September 15, 2011, with a series of travelling events and exhibitions, and ends with two auctions in New York on December 14 and 15, 2011.

The first day of the auction is devoted to her jewels, often called The Crown Jewels of Hollywood or, as my local newspaper called them this morning, the "fashion equivalent of King Tut's tomb." This auction includes such pieces as La Peregrina, a pearl worn originally by European queens and the Elizabeth Taylor Diamond both worth millions as well as ‘lesser’ pieces including the wedding bands from her marriages to Richard Burton.

The second day of the auction is devoted to Elizabeth Taylor’s collection of one-of-a-kind haute couture gowns, pret-a-porter fashions, coats, capes, handbags, costume jewelry and shoes and will include a couple of wedding gowns. Apparently, her closet opens to reveal an amazing selection of famous clothing items that Taylor chose herself for certain events in her life, like the dress she wore to the Taming of the Shrew royal performance in 1967.

Literally a jeans-and-tee kind of lady myself, I’m not sure why I am fascinated by Elizabeth Taylor’s life. I would really love to attend the auction in New York although simply as a spectator wanting a better look into the late actress’s spectacular collection. It would be nice if some of Elizabeth Taylor’s pieces wound up in a museum of some sort so that they could be shared with the public, which would be true to Taylor’s feeling that she was the only a temporary guardian of these pieces and that they were meant to be shared with everyone.

I enjoyed learning about her jewelry in the book called My Love Affair With Jewelry. I understand it to be the only book about her life that she wrote herself.

Dog Gone Movie Review (2008)

Dog Gone is a straight-to-DVD family movie that was produced by Screen Media Films and Unversial Studios and released on October 7, 2008. It's not a big budget film but it is an entertaining adventure that includes one 12-year old boy, one dog and three bumbling jewel thieves.

If you have a youngster in your home who loves building things, they will love the contraptions that Owen uses to thwart the thieves. (The contraptions remind me of those that were used in the 2009 movie Hotel for Dogs, although done here on a lower budget.)

Of course, if you love dogs you will love this movie and if you're a dog lover who cannot stand to see a dog hurt, be aware that there is a small section near the end where the dog is in a perilous situation but that all turns out fine in the end.

It is a family movie, rated PG for bullying (which does get nasty), rude humour (also known in my world as bathroom humor), language, mild threat and action. However, if you are like me, and you know how much your children enjoy bathroom humour, you're willing to put up with some of that.

The comedy is over the top and at times outrageous and the trailer makes that very clear. I particularly enjoyed the antics of the obviously not-real forest critters.

Gooby 2009 Family Movie Review

If you have ever faced a move with your family, you know how they can cause your children worries and concerns. Gooby shares the story of one family’s move and an 11-year old boy named Willy.

When Willy arrives at his new home and is lonely, he wishes for someone to save him and his teddy bear, Gooby, comes to life. Gooby is a companion who at first is frightened of much in the human world but, after some adventures with Willy, winds up bringing the boy and father together.

Gooby is a Canadian film that was produced in 2009 by Coneybeare Stories. It features the voice of Robbie Coltrane, who played Rubeus Hagrid in Harry Potter. Willy is played by Matthew Knight, a young Canadian actor who can also be seen in the popular Good Witch Hallmark movie series. Knight won a Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a DVD Film for his role in Gooby. Rounding out the cast are David James Elliott as the father, Ingrid Kavelaars as the mother and Eugene Levy as the nerdy teacher.

In terms of who should watch Gooby, it is rated PG for some mild rude humor and bullying and it contains bathroom humour, which seems to crop up in these family movies and which your children will love. It is essentially a clean and simple family movie that shares smiles and lessons about growing up.

Gooby didn't fair well with the critics but that doesn`t mean it isn`t a nice, family friendly movie. I recommend checking out the Amazon customer reviews and the movie trailer:

My son who had a prized teddy bear and endured a few military movies would have liked this movie when he was younger. If you watch this with your children expecting a nice story and not a blockbuster movie, you might be surprised. A good choice for a family movie, one you might choose to rent rather than own.

The Lion King Diamond Edition (2011) Review

Well, it is here at last or it will be in a couple of days on October 4, 2011 and the advance reviews indicate that the experts are more than a little impressed with the quality with which Disney has transferred The Lion King to blu-ray disc.

The Movie Mom says that the re-release of The Lion King in 3D roared at the movie theatres during the limited, two-week run that it was given, shocking everyone by out grossing Brad Pitt's new baseball movie, Moneyball.

In general, High-Def Digest loves The Lion King, saying "The Lion King is Disney's greatest achievement."

My morning newspaper, The Ottawa Citizen, said that The Diamond Edition of The Lion King "is the most sophisticated to date, with a completely restored theatrical version, updated soundtrack and more."

Blu-ray.com said, "Once again, Disney has treated one of its animated classics like royalty and the results are nothing short of spectacular." We should be pleased that Disney is going to lengths to make sure these classic animated movies are upgraded in the best possible quality for our children and for generations to come.

I believe that The Lion King Diamond Edition is destined to be found under many Christmas trees this year. What do you think? Is there a copy of this movie in your future?

It did not take long for the J.K. Rowling biographical made-for-television movie from Lifetime to arrive on DVD. You can already pre-order Magic Beyond Words from Amazon. It is being released on DVD (but not on blu-ray) October 18, 2011.

Judging by the Amazon customer reviews, this movie was fairly well done and well received and is ideal for anyone who is a big Harry Potter fan or just plain curious about the life of J.K. Rowling.

Kate Hudson's Isadora Diamond

If you did not see the movie How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days and you love jewellery, you need to see it. The part of the movie near the end in which women attending the Warner Advertising Gala are offered the opportunity to FROST themselves with diamonds provided by Harry Winston is truly amazing.

Andie Anderson (played by Kate Hudson) enters in a beautiful yellow cocktail dress designed by the film’s costume designer Karen Patch to work perfectly on Kate and with the Isadora Diamond. She looks lovely but when she puts on the Isadora Diamond, she is simply stunning. Really, I don’t think I will ever forget that moment. The necklace suited the dress and Andie perfectly.

The 87-carat diamond pendent Andie wore was designed for Kate Hudson to wear in this movie and is worth 5 million dollars although, it is said that she used a 'stunt double' in the movie that was worth $10,000. As an interesting aside, IMDB reports that the movie used $14,200,000 worth of jewels in How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days.

If you love the Isadora Diamond Necklace, you might be interested in knowing that there is a replica available at a much more reasonable price on Amazon. The faux necklace was designed by Emitations and features a huge canary Cubic Zirconia and a curved chain of faux diamond Cubic Zirconia stones.

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days Movie Review

After having recently watched and reviewed Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson in the 2008 movie Fool's Gold, I happened across How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days when I was changing the channel. Knowing that some critics claimed Fool's Gold an effort on behalf of the studio to capitalize on the popularity of the actors in How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days, I was more than a little curious about this movie and settled in to enjoy the show.

And I did.

How to Lose A Guy is based on a short cartoon book by Michele Alexander. It shares the story of a female magazine writer assigned to date a young man and to make all of the mistakes that women supposedly make that drive guys away and, of course, to write a story about her experience. However, the guy she chooses is an ad executive who is in the middle of a bet that he can make a woman fall in love with him within 10 days. Hence the tagline, "One of them is lying. So is the other."

I laughed out loud.

Definitely a lightweight, enjoyable movie, a romantic comedy. High-Def Digest was quick to point out that this is one chick flick that attempted to please the GUYS who would have to watch it. And, despite it's lack of critical success, when I laugh out loud that generally means that I enjoyed a movie. Note that How to Lose A Guy is rated PG-13 but has some pretty strong sexual references and language for that rating.

Fool's Gold Movie Review (2008)

Fool's Gold is a romantic comedy and part thriller movie, which stars Matthew McConaughey, Kate Hudson, Donald Sutherland, Ewen Bremner and Alexis Dziena.

I stumbled across Fool's Gold quite accidentally last night when I could not sleep. I've learned my lesson not to start watching a movie in the middle of the night because it is quite possible that rather than putting you to sleep, the movie will make you stay awake for a full two hours...but I digress.

A bit of online research shows that Fool's Gold was not very successful, particularly with the critics who say that it was an attempt to ride on the success that Hudson and McConaughey had in How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days. Nevertheless, I enjoyed Fool's Gold. It was a fun piece with plenty of humorous moments and I think it is quite possible you too will like it if you like romantic comedies and if you approach it simply as light entertainment, rather than looking for a top-rated movie.

The critics? Well, here is a sample of what they had to say:

High-Def Digest said it is but another unsuccessful example of Hollywood using popular lead actors rather than a great script.

Blu-ray.com says that despite an attractive and charismatic pair, the movie is somewhat trite. They do say that the tropical scenery makes it worth viewing, if not owning.

At Rotten Tomatoes just 11 percent of the critics liked it. However, 53 percent of the audience who participated in the poll liked it so perhaps it is worth watching...

Mad Men Season 3 Blu-ray Review

Mad Men Season 3 was one of the best blu-ray movie choices of 2010. It was an Emmy award winning television drama and saw the continuation of the story from parts 1 and 2 that included marriage, childhood and the advertising agency falling apart. Amazon called it "a shocking portrait of a time that was anything but innocent. Nothing is as sexy. Nothing is as provocative. Nothing is as it seems."

Amazon customer Highland Rob summed up Mad Men Season 3 very nicely when he talked about it having the "best writing and acting produced in Hollywood in a long time." He felt that Season 3 was the best season although he stressed that you should watch the two previous seasons first.

DVD Talk talked about how this series built as it went along with each subsequent season being even better than the previous one and stated that they considered this season to be the best, so far.

In terms of the blu-ray release, the experts had a lot to say:

High-Def Digest also thought it was the best show produced on television. They summed up by saying that "with superb audio and video and a nice collection of extras, this is a set for any Mad Men fan." They closed with HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Blu-ray.com called this Mad Men season riveting and hopes that this blu-ray release brings new fans, as they know it will please existing fans.

Personally, I still have to make it through Seasons 1 and 2 before I check out Mad Men Season 3. Doing so on blu-ray will definitely be a top priority.

Rumours of Oscars For The Help

Rumours about this year's Oscar nominations are already swirling about and I am thrilled to see that The Help is on the list of Oscar possibilities.

The Help opened on August 10, 2011. The movie recounts the story from the very popular book of the same name (written by Kathryn Stockett) of the black maids working for white people in the southern regions of the United States in the 1960s.

The Oscar talk includes possible nods for the actors including Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Emma Stone, Bryce Dallas Howard, Allison Janney and Jessica Chastain. It is possible, therefore, that if more than one of them receives a nomination that they could be competing against each other.

I feel, and obviously others agree, that the acting was superb and that each of the actors was perfectly cast so I would count on seeing a couple of these names at the Oscars...

The Help Movie Review

FINALLY, my husband and I went to see The Help and we loved it. Don't tell anyone but he said that The Help was a far better movie than Conan...but it's true (and hardly surprising.) Here's a bit more:

I have read the book, The Help and I loved it so I was unsure about what the movie would bring. The movie, however, remained mostly true to the book and was perfect. At more than 2 hours, it is long but at no point will you find yourself waiting for the time to pass.

The characters were perfectly cast -- I think all of them. Loved Skeeter, although it took me a minute or two to reconcile her with the picture I was carrying in my head from the book. Aibileen was amazing, loving and brave. Minnie, strong and feisty. Celia, absolutely hysterical. Hilly definitely not nice. The mother, spot on.

I really like what Jeremy Jahns had to say about The Help so I thought I would share his words here with you. I appreciated the fact that he toned down the foul language for this movie review. (Too bad he wouldn't do that for all of them.) About The Help he says that it is a well-written, well-acted movie and the characters are really likeable, too. I agree.

I like his review. I loved the movie. I feel comfortable HIGHLY RECOMMENDING it to you. It will make you laugh and it will make you cry and it does NOT matter if you have read the book. My husband enjoyed this movie as much as I did and he had not read it.

The Characters on THE HELP

The characters on The Help are an interesting assortment of women of all ages. After I finished reading the book, I was thrilled to discover these video character profiles of each of the main characters in the movie. I hope you enjoy them, too.

First, up is Skeeter. Skeeter is the young lady who has just graduated from journalism school and who wants to become a journalist, a feat not so easily accomplished in the 1960s so she takes her first job writing a cleaning column although she knows nothing about cleaning. She eventually decides to write the story of the maids of Jackson, Mississippi.

Next up is Aibileen, one of the two main maids in the movie. She is going through life, getting by until she finds a new interest in sharing her life stories on paper.

Then there is Minnie, the other maid who plays a huge role in this movie. Minnie is a very strong woman who decides to help Skeeter and Aibileen write the book. She has no problem saying what is on her mind.

Finally, we have Hilly. Hilly is the president of the women's association in Jackson, Mississippi. She's a strong personality of another sort - used to getting her way and having people follow whatever she does. She's also backward thinking; she wants things to stay as they are rather than have things go forward and improve.

Of course, this is a story with many important characters. To fully appreciate them, you should read the book and watch the movie.

The Help is a 2011 movie adaptation of the book of the same name by Kathryn Stockett. The story is that of a white woman who develops a relationship with two black maids in the early 1960s. It stars Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jessica Chastain, Sissy Spacek, Mike Vogel and Allison Janney.

The Hunger Games Movie Release Date

I finally read the book and I, like fans of the book am now anxious to see the movie but the wait is going to be a long one...I just read the official release date of The Hunger Games movie is November 22, 2013. Oops, make that March 23, 2012 -- apparently, the November date is for the next movie, Catching Fire.

That's a year LONGER than I read previously. How are we EVER going to manage to wait that long? Any ideas, besides re-reading the book, that is? Fans are going to be desparately consuming every bit of information that is released about the new movie. Hope that won't ruin the movie in the end.

The Help 2011 Movie Review

First let me say that I haven't seen The Help yet. However, the reviews are pleasant enough saying that the movie is enjoyable but safe.

Roger Ebert acknowledges that the book The Help (by Kathryn Stockett) has a lot of loyal readers who may have been imagining the movie exactly as it was made. He calls it entertaining and praises the actors from Viola Davis to Octavia Spencer to Emma Stone, Bryce Dallas Howard and Alison Janney. He does suggest that they would have "benefitted from a more fearless screenplay." Ebert gives the movie three stars.

My local paper this morning says that the movie is unfortunately "burdened by cliche" but saved by the stars. Katharine Monk says it is exactly what one expects from Hollywood, choosing the words "familiar and predictable" but calling it enjoyable. Monk also gave the movie three stars.

One of my favorite reviewers, Nell Minnow who writes as The Movie Mom, calls the movie one of the best dramas of the year, saying that the movie "engages with its sensitive subject matter humbly and sincerely." She gives it a score of B+.

Having benefited from these reviews, The Help is still on my list. I'm not sure when I will get to see it though, given the fact that the next movie we see at the movie theatre will likely be Cowboys and Aliens since it is my husband's turn to pick.

Black Swan Blu-ray Movie Review

Black Swan was an amazing movie. You can certainly see why Natalie Portman won the Acadamey Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. She was impressive.

The story was good, too. I would highly recommend this movie EXCEPT for the fact that the disturbing bits were, well, extremely disturbing. If you watch the trailer (you can see it here), and you are uncomfortable with the worst parts, take that as a warning that this movie may not be for you.

The choice is up to you. If you choose not to watch it you will, however, be missing what may be one of the best movies of the year.

Blu-ray or DVD? Well, putting it simply, Blu-ray.com says that it is a must own on blu-ray, calling it "one of the best films of 2010, a dark, lurid psychosexual drama that plumbs the depths of artistic desperation."

The Hunger Games 2012 Movie

I have just finished reading The Hunger Games and I must say that I was totally impressed and quite enjoyed it. The book is a young adult novel and as such an easy read. It flows very nicely and has great character development.

Now I must put my hands on a copy of the second book by Suzanne Collins, Catching Fire and then, the third one, Mockingjay.

Finally, of course, I will have to wait until 2012 for the release of the movie version of The Hunger Games and that, of course, seems like an eternity right now.

Jack Nicholson Drinks Kopi Luwak Coffee in The Bucket List

As far as I know, Jack Nicholson is NOT the official spokesperson for Kopi Luwak coffee, although he might as well be considering the boost he gave the coffee when he enthused about it here in 2007 movie The Bucket List:

I had an interesting COFFEE break earlier today when I went looking for more information about this very expensive coffee. (I went tea in hand because I do not actually drink coffee, LOL.)

Turns out that the coffee beans used to make Kopi Luwak coffee (some also call it poop coffee) are a result of a process that involves a critter called an Asian Palm Civet consuming the berries from the coffee plant, digesting them and defacating them. Rather simple and apparently the digestion process, which leaves the berries entact, changes the nature of the coffee been making it smooth, nutty and some even say, ah, earthy.

Now I have more than one reason to want to see The Bucket List -- I understand it is a very good movie, I love Jack Nicholson AND I am curious about the coffee.

Elizabeth Taylor Furious Love Movie 2012

Martin Scorsese is preparing to bring to the big screen a biopic about the love affair between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. A biopic movie is one that is ABOUT someone's life, in this case, about Taylor and her love affair with Burton.

The movie is based on a book called Furious Love, which was written by Sam Kashner and Nancy Schoenberger. It is said that Taylor did not authorize any of the books that were written about her but that she worked with these authors by sharing the love letters that she exchanged with Burton.

I have seen all kinds of names mentioned with regard to who could play Elizabeth Taylor including Natalie Portman, Angelina Jolie and Catherine Zeta Jones. I guess we'll just have to wait for more news in that regard.

Meanwhile, if you want to know more, pick up a copy of this book, which shares in great detail information about the working and personal lives of one of Hollywood's most famous couples.

New Steven Spielberg Movie: Tintin 2011

My husband came into the room when I was watching The Adventures of Tintin 2011 movie trailer and raised an eyebrow as he is known for doing. (You can watch the trailer on my previous post by clicking here,)

I told him that I was watching the trailer for the new Tintin movie that Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson are doing and my husband's eyebrow went up a tiny bit higher. He commented that it seemed a bit odd for Spielberg to be doing an animated movie so I went looking to find out why Spielberg is bringing Tintin to the movie screens this year.

It turned out that the answer to that question is fairly simple and straightforward. Steven Spielberg became a strong fan of The Adventures of Tintin comic books when he read about them in a review that compared Raiders of the Lost Ark to Tintin. He was presented with a set of the French books and it did not matter that he could not understand the words. He fell in love with the artwork.

Michael Farr, author of the book Tintin: The Complete Companion said that Spielberg was the only one who could bring the books to life. Let’s hope that Farr was right and that Steven Spielberg pleases the Tintin fans. Until then, I am going to get my hands on a copy of the book and see what Tintin is all about.

The Adventures of Tintin 2011 Movie

The Adventures of Tintin are not books that my children read, although as a volunteer librarian, I saw them pass through many hands. With the announcement recently that Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson are preparing a movie version of The Adventures of Tintin, I went looking to find out what the books and the movie are all about.

The movie is definitely an adaptation of the book series of the same name which was created by Georges Remi and it focuses on three parts of the series: The Crab with the Golden Claws, The Secret of the Unicorn and Red Rackham's Treasure. The storyline follows Tintin and his friends as they go on a treasure hunt to a sunken ship.

The Adventures of Tintin is Steven Spielberg’s first animated film and his first movie based on a comic-book. It stars Jamie Bell (of Billy Elliot fame) as Tintin and features Daniel Craig (of James Bond fame) as pirate Red Rackham.

The Adventures of Tintin is due to be released in 3D, 2D and Imax 3D on December 23, 2011. Let's hope that it measures up to the level that we expect of Steven Spielberg films.

Magic Beyond Words J.K. Rowling Biopic Movie 2011

In all the hoopla about the release of the last installment in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, you may (as I almost did) have missed news about the upcoming biopic about J.K. Rowling called, Magic Beyond Words.

If you are a fan of both the Harry Potter books and the movies and you are curious about the life and times of J.K. Rowling, it looks like this will be an interesting movie.

This J.K. Rowling story is based on the unauthorized book, J.K. Rowling: A Biography by Sean Smith. Although not authorized by Rowling, the story is said NOT to be of a tabloid nature so hopefully it will be reasonably well done. Take a look at J.K. Rowling's world through this movie trailer:

LEGALLY Blonde Movie Review

LEGALLY Blonde is a seriously light and enjoyable comedy movie from 2001. It stars Reese Witherspoon as a fashionable university student named Elle who has it all, at least until she looses her boyfriend (played by Matthew Davis.) Her attempts to win back her young man find her enrolled in law school and surprising us all.

LEGALLY Blonde was generally well received placing at number 29 on Bravo’s 2007 list of the top 100 funniest movies. Reese Witherspoon even received a nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.

Believe it or not, I did not see it until just now and I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed it. It has a sad moment or two but mostly is funny and it will also have you routing for Elle.

Little information is available about the blu-ray version of this movie although it was released on July 5, 2011 and is available.

Now, I expect I will have to check out the sequels, LEGALLY Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde and LEGALLY Blondes, which was not released at the movie theatres but instead was released to DVD.

Doctor Who Disappearing Tardis Coffee Mug

Pretty amazed about the Doctor Who disappearing Tardis mug, we are. Although I must start by admitting that I do not know very much about Doctor Who.

There is, however, one member of my household who regularly spouts random Doctor Who references and quotes and then rolls his eyes because the rest of us don't get the point.

He's my 17-year old son and I know he would love this mug but I also know from the response to the page I wrote about it that it would be a phenomenal gift idea for anyone who loves Dr. Who -- from a teenage boy like my son right through to the ah, slightly older gentleman who has been a Doctor Who fan for (dare I say it) decades.

The Muppets are back! And they are back in a big way. Walt Disney Records is releasing a full-length CD entitled, Muppets: The Green Album.

I’ll have to quote Amazon when they say that the new Muppet CD is the "MOST Celebrational, Tributational, Compilational" new album.

It is going to be different than previous musical releases as it features twelve tracks of your favorite Muppet music performed by today’s rock and alternative music bands, which means that it will sound different. Artists involved in this project include The Fray, OK-GO, Weezer and My Morning Jacket and songs include your favorites - Rainbow Connection, It's Not Easy Being Green and The Muppets Show Theme - and more.

Lord of the Rings Blu-ray Trilogy Extended Edition 2011

The new Lord of the Rings blu-ray trilogy almost snuck past me. However, I saw mention of it in the newspaper last week along with a very unusual five-star rating, which sent me looking for more information.

It turns out the new Lord of the Rings Blu-ray Trilogy features the EXTENDED VERSIONS of the movies and not the theatrical version. The movies and the special features are included on 15 blu-ray and DVD discs and deliver 11 hours of movie watching and an amazing 26 hours of special features. Apparently, most of the special features are not new but that won't matter to my family who, I expect, have not seen many of them anyway and who would not mind re-watching them in any case.

The movies have been remastered carefully under the watchful eye of Peter Jackson himself and the experts in the blu-ray world concur that this is the BEST the Lord of the Rings movies have ever looked...and some even say parts might look BETTER than the original releases.

Harry Potter and Star Wars Similarities

Are the Harry Potter and Star Wars movies cut from the same cloth? Do you see the similarities between the two movies?

I've been enjoying the posts about social networking on Bit Rebels. I've enjoyed them enough to subscribe to the updates, which is not something I do regularly. It was, therefore, interesting that in my mailbox this morning was a post called 'Harry Potter vs. Star Wars: The Similarities Are Striking.'

The author points out some of the similarities between the two movies and illustrates them with a series of Harry Potter and Star Wars pictures that share the likenesses of the films. Stop and think about it for a minute and you will quickly realize that both have a hero, a reliable friend, a female friend, a hairy friend, a wise teacher, and more...

Well, J.K. Rowling has done it again. She's put together a positively magical package that has fans around the world celebrating the ANNOUNCEMENT of Pottermore. More than 99,000 people are already following Pottermore on Twitter...and the on-line reading experience is not even going to be available until October, 2011.

It is truly amazing that she could create such a furor for a product that is not even available. The excitement is so strong that her attractive new website Pottermore could not cope with the demand from people wanting to sign up to be notified when Pottermore becomes available.

J.K. Rowling's announcement video, issued today, June 23, 2011, does look positively amazing and I am amongst those very excited about the newest development in Harry Potter's world. Amy Adams and Kermit The Frog

Turns out that popular green dudes like Kermit The Frog can pick and choose who they appear in the movies with. In this case, Kermit (aided by Jason Segal) personally invited Amy Adams to join him in The Muppets new movie, The Muppets and Adams says that it was impossible to say no to those froggy eyes.

Kermit, after learning about you and Lady Gaga in 2009 (see What's The Scoop With Lady Gaga and Kermit The Frog) I am beginning to think that you really are a ladies' frog.

(And yes, if you ask, I would be thrilled to join you on the big screen OR on the red carpet.)

Water For Elephants (2011) Movie Review

Water For Elephants was not a movie I knew much about when a group of lady friends took me off to see it one day not too long ago. As a matter of fact I had almost no knowledge of this movie and I am not sure that I had even heard of it. I was thrilled to discover that it was a historically based circus movie and I am pleased to be able to say that I loved it.

It was a romance, for sure, starring Reese Witherspoon, Robert Pattinson and Christoph Waltz and I thought that they were all very nicely cast. However, it was possibly the most violent romantically themed movie that I have seen.

I still enjoyed it enough to come home and read Sara Gruen's book of the same name. I was really curious as to whether the story was a true story and discovered that it was not. I appreciated knowing, however, that Gruen based the book on circus research and even included some events that were rumoured to have happened in the real circus world. Apparently, there is a lot of speculation with regard to events from the circus world.

It is not too soon to pre-order your copy of Water For Elephants from Amazon. Although they have not actually announced a release date yet, they have marked the retail price down. As always, you will be protected by Amazon's price gurantee and you will receive FREE delivery if your order is worth $25 or more. Unfortunately, it is too soon to comment on the quality of the blu-ray release, although I am thinking this will be a good movie to watch on blu-ray.

Circus (2010) Documentary Film Review

If you love the circus, you will love this six-hour PBS series from 2010 called 'Circus.' It follows a year in the life of The Big Apple Circus.

The Big Apple Circus is a hugely popular European-style, non-profit circus whose base is in New York. In 2010, they presented a whopping 350 shows to adoring audiences.

In this series, you will travel with them for that year. You will enjoy the artistry as it is presented in the big ring. You will enjoy the drama behind the scenes. You will have a quick peek into what it is like to be a member of a travelling circus and, if you are like certain members of my family, you will want to run away and join the circus.

What's The Scoop On Lady Gaga and Kermit The Frog?

If I were a frog friend of Lady Gaga and I saw her dressed in this coat constructed as it is, ah, out of my friends, I don't think I would want to go out on a date with her.

Lady Gaga’s coat was created by designer Jean Charles de Castelbajac and unfortunately, I cannot assure you that no frogs were hurt in its creation although Kermit assures us that none of the frogs were his personal friends.

Kermit DID wind up going out on a date with Lady Gaga when he accompanied the singer to the 2009 MTV Music Video Awards (although to give credit where it is due, she did NOT wear this coat.)

Upon the couple's arrival, the world was immediately concerned about the subject of Miss Piggy and her status as Kermit's girlfriend. Miss Piggy and Kermit have been romantically linked together for years. Some people even questioned if this date made Kermit somewhat of a ‘ladies’ frog’

Kermit reassured his adoring public that Lady Gaga and he are just friends but you might want to check it out for yourself in this video from the red carpet at the music awards where it is clear that at least Lady Gaga is enamoured with our beloved Kermit The Frog.

The Lion King Trilogy 2011

This fall, Disney is bringing The Lion King out of The Vault. However, they are first bringing a new and different version, a 3D version, to movie theatres for two weeks before they re-releases the movie on blu-ray disc, blu-ray 3D and DVD.

The blu-ray version will be available for purchase on October 4, 2011; the DVD version on November 14, 2011.

All of the versions, of course, are available for purchase already from Amazon by clicking right here.

The Lion King Trilogy, as shown here, is the package that caught my eye.

It includes four movies: the original 2D versions of The Lion King, The Lion King 1 1/2 and The Lion King 2, a digital copy of The Lion King PLUS the brand-new version, The Lion King in 3D.

The trilogy set is packed with special features including those that come with The Lion King blu-ray release: new deleted scenes, an extended version of The Morning Report, never seen bloopers, Disney Second Screen, Pride of The Lion King, The Lion King: A Memoir - Don Hahn, Disney Sing-Along, an interactive gallery, an audio commentary and Disney's Virtual Vault: Classic DVD Features Powered by BD-Live.

It also includes special features with the two other movies.

The Lion King 1-1/2 features Timon and Pumbaa's Vacation Safari, deleted scenes, Timon: Behind the Legend, Before the Beginning: The Making of The Lion King 1 ½ and a music video.

The Lion King 2 features include Timon and Pumbaa's Insectapedia, an animated short called One by One, Proud of Simba's Pride, Timon and Pumbaa: Find Out Why and a music video.

Amazon already has the trilogy boxed set discounted. I will not quote the price here because it is subject to change but I will say that the sale price is pretty good when you consider what is included with this attractively packaged, eight-disc gift set. When you look at the prices of the three individual Lion King movies on DVD right now, this boxed set becomes a very good deal indeed. (And do not forget that Amazon will ship it for FREE.)

If you want to upgrade your copy of The Lion King or perhaps buy it for the first time on blu-ray, I think The Lion King Trilogy is the way to go. It is way too soon to be thinking of next Christmas but I would be willing to bet that this will be a top-rated movie gift choice next Christmas.

The LIon King 3D Movie Release

Have you heard about the new 3D version of The Lion King that Disney will be releasing this September? It's the same Lion King movie that we all know and love but redone in 3D.

Since this is the first hand-drawn animated movie being released in 3D, I am kind of curious about the 3D aspect but I have been unable thus far to turn up much information, which leaves me speculating about HOW the movie is being made in 3D.

What we do know right now is general information about the release of The Lion King on 3D. The 3D version will appear in movie theatres for a very short, two-week run starting on September 16, 2011.

After that, Disney's Vault will release the movie in a number of packages. Ranging from a single DVD disc right through to an eight disc blu-ray trilogy boxed set, all of which (except the DVD) will be released on October 4, 2011.

If it is the DVD you are after and you want the 2011 version, you will have to wait a bit longer -- until November 15, 2011 when the DVD is set to be released. However, there's no need to wait for the DVD version because it is still available on Amazon from the 2003 Platinum release by clicking right here.

Meanwhile, we will have to wait for more information about the process and about the quality of the blu-ray transfer as well as the quality of the blu-ray 3D movie. Vincent Van Gogh: A Brush With Genius Imax Documentary Film Review

Vincent Van Gogh: A Brush With Genius is an interesting and educational look at the man, his artwork and the places that inspired him. This film, unlike many others, actually focuses on his art rather than his illness making it, I believe a bit unusual. It is a beautiful film that features incredible quality since it was created to be shown on Imax screens.

I've always had a fascination with Vincent Van Gogh and I love many of his pieces of art. I knew little about the man and enjoyed my role as an armchair traveller recently when I watched this film. I think it would be of interest to anyone who loves learning about famous artists, good for classroom use and particularly good for anyone travelling to Amsterdam (where the Van Gogh museum is) and/or any of the other sites that Van Gogh is noted for working from.

That is, by the way, exactly how the film proceeds. It shows the making of this film and travels to many of the sites that Vincent Van Gogh painted in. An interesting trip to Europe could be one that followed in the footsteps of the artist and this film. I know I would have enjoyed seeing this documentary film BEFORE I went to Europe and visited the Vincent Van Gogh museum.

And the blu-ray quality? High-Def Digest calls it "reference quality video transfer and a highly active audio presentation."

Jim Henson: The Career and Life of a Gifted Puppeteer and Creator of the Muppets

Jim Henson was the very gifted puppeteer born in 1936 in Greenville, Mississippi, who created characters that continue to be hugely popular today.

The shows that you will recognize his puppet creations from include Sesame Street and The Muppets but of course he was involved in many other products including the creation of Yoda for Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. He is perhaps most famous for his little green friend, as shown here, named Kermit The Frog.

Upon Henson's untimely death in 1990, Entertainment Tonight presented this short video clip, which nicely summarizes Jim Henson's lifetime achievements:

Disney's Mars Needs Moms Fails At The Box Office...But Is It Any Good?

It's not very often that Disney makes a movie that turns out to be a box office bomb but it looks like Mars Needs Moms was a wipeout. The newspaper I read (the Ottawa Citizen) said that Mars Needs Moms "was one of the biggest write-offs in modern Hollywood history." According to the Citizen, it cost $150 million dollars to make the movie (plus other sources say another $50 million to promote it) and earned $6.9 million in its debut, which put it in the 12th spot for worst openings of all time.

Those figures are pretty powerful and I will admit that Mars Needs Moms held no attraction to me. My children are older and therefore the movie stayed pretty much in my peripheral vision but now that I have read how poorly the movie did at the box office, I am wondering if Mars Needs Moms was any GOOD.

Wikipedia calls this film a "3D computer-animated sci-fi adventure comedy film" and says that it is based on the illustrated book of the same name, written by Berkeley Breathed.

IMDB describes the storyline in few words when they say, "A young boy named Milo gains a deeper appreciation for his mom after Martiasn come to Earth to take her away." (I wonder if the short plot description has any meaning?) And the movie rates a score of just 4.1 out of 10.

Rotten Tomatoes says, "The cast is solid and it's visually well-crafted, but Mars Needs Moms suffers from a lack of imagination and heart." The film struggles to get 34 percent grade of the Tomatometer.

The trailer makes the movie look like fun but the reviews ah, well, they are not so good so I went looking for some information about WHY Mars Needs Moms did not do so well at the box office.

In the Hollywood Reporter, Disney's President of Worldwide Distribution is quoted as having said, "The right audience came, but not in the numbers we needed."

So that leaves us wondering why didn't they come to see this film?

Box office observers have made a few observations:

That movie fans do not always LIKE motion-capture technology.
That the movie title with the use of the word Moms may have been a turn-off for boys.
That animation works better when the characters are not people.
That a movie with Mom being kidnapped might have been just a tad frightening for youngsters.

Ebert Presents The Movie called it an "animated 3D time killer" and also focused on the dark subject matter of a Mom disappearing.

The Movie Mom calls Mars Needs Mums a "decidedly second-tier Disney with third-tier visuals" and gives it a mark of 'C.' The film is rated PG for science fiction action and peril and she recommends it for children from the fourth grade up.

So all of this has me wanting to see the movie for myself out of, at the very least, curiousity about why it did so poorly. If after reading all of this, YOU want to watch Mars Needs Moms, you can buy it from Amazon now in advance of the release date of August 9, 2011.

I feel badly for the film-makers who obviously put a lot of time and energy into making this movie. It mus be pretty disappointing to invest so much effort in a projec tyou love and have it poorly received.

Lady Gaga Out Ranks Oprah Winfrey As The Most Powerful Celebrity

Let me start by admitting that I know less about Lady Gaga than I do about Oprah Winfrey. That might be understandable, given that Oprah Winfrey has been front row centre in North American society for the last 25 years.

Granted, one cannot miss Lady Gaga and I do know a few of her songs. Who can miss her presence?

It was with interest then that I noticed Lady Gaga recently pushed Oprah Winfrey out of the number one spot on the Forbes annual power ranking which looks at the earnings, fame and exposure of members of the media from within the circles of music, film, television, sports and fashion.

Oprah has been at the top of the list four times in the last six years and she is still a powerful lady off in a slightly different direction these days. The newspaper says that her new television network OWN is going to be in 80 million homes by the end of the year but, so far, it is woefully off of that target with an average viewer number of 179,000. I expect the presence of Oprah, now that The Oprah Winfrey Show is finished, will help that.

A Crush On You stars Brigid Brannagh, Sean Patrick Flanery, Christine Scott Bennett and Michael Clarke Duncan and aired only on the Hallmark Channel on June 11, 2011.

Unfortunately, A Crush on You has not been released on DVD or blu-ray disc.

Does Santa Claus really have a daughter?

This post was inspired by a friend who pointed out something so obvious that I well, totally missed it. Yesterday, I wrote about the new lineup of Hallmark Christmas movies for 2011, one of which is Annie Claus' Year off.

It tells the story of Santa's daughter, Annie, who takes the year off to live in the real world and decide whether or not she really wants to take over the family business when Santa Claus retires for good. She sets off for Los Angeles in search of real life and, well, LOVE. (It is a Hallmark movie.) She is unaware that an actor has been hired to win her affections and she falls for the imposter but eventually discovers that a toy store owner who needs her help is a better match.

STOP -- This is when my friend Susan52 pointed out the obvious -- she is intrigued by this film because previously she had been unaware that Santa Claus had a daughter. And she is right, who knew?

Believe it or not, the Hallmark Christmas Movies for 2011 have been announced and yes, the list is an interesting one. It actually consists of seven new movies and one animated television special.

In true Hallmark style, it incorporates two big names you are going to recognize, those of Sir Roger Moore in A Princess For Christmas (which was originally called Christmas at Castlebury Hall) and Melissa Gilbert in Christmas Pageant.

It will be the first time that Hallmark has taken a successful franchise from its card division and used it in its movie division. Since they have chosen their husky pup Jingle, I believe that Jingle All The Way could be a popular Christmas special.

Tron: Legacy (2010) Blu-ray Movie Review

The first Tron movie that I saw was the second one, Tron: Legacy (2010). We saw it in 3D at the movie theatre and I really enjoyed it. It used 3D perhaps as it ought to be used, with emphasis on the 3D element when the players are inside the video game.

I just watched an interesting review by Jeremy Jahns, a YouTube movie reviewer whose reviews I enjoy. He liked it for precisely the reasons I liked it. It is NOT a deep movie but it is fun and it is not totally without a storyline.

The blu-ray disc? Well, as might be expected Blu-ray.com called the video and audio content extraordinary but it lost a few points for the movie itself. (We know this movie does not have the strongest storyline going.)
