The House with a Clock in its Walls Blu-ray Movie Review

The House with a Clock in its Walls Blu-ray Movie Review

The title of this movie is mysterious and will have you wondering what the movie called The House with a Clock in its Walls is all about. I had previously seen trailers and was intrigued but it was not until Halloween 2023 that my husband and I put this 2018 movie on to watch.

The story, is based on a children's novel by John Bellairs and Edward Gorey. The movie tells the story of a clever 10-year old boy named Lewis Barnavelt (played by Owen Vaccaro) who goes to live with his slightly odd uncle, Jonathan Barnavelt (played by Jack Black) and his friend and neighbor Florence Zimmerman, (played by Cate Blanchett). It turns out that his uncle's house is full of mystery and intrigue and danger. It's the first children's spooky movie from Eli Roth, director of a number of adult horror stories. Roth considers this film a "starter horror movie" for families and tweens. Here's the official trailer:

PROFESSIONAL REVIEWS

Common Sense Media gave the movie 3 stars saying, "it isn't a masterpiece, but it's just spooky and funny enough to entertain young moviegoers who are new to the horror genre."

Simon Abrams on Roger Ebert.com called the movie, "basically watchable" was fairly critical and gave the film a 2.5 star rating.

Finally, The Hollywood Reporter calls the interactions between Black and Blanchett (that Simon Abrams did not like) an "enjoyably unlikely pairing."

WHO IS IT SUITABLE FOR?

Common Sense Media recommends the movie for children aged 11 and up.  They say, in their Parents Need to Know Section, that "the movie is very creepy, and that there are a few scenes that are downright jump-worthy for kids. There are scary toys and dolls, ominous sounds, a demon, witchcraft, necromancy, and the occult" but they also say "that good ultimately prevails against the forces of evil." Within the story are also a few injuries, a few milder curse words and an exchange of insults. It is not a lightly frightening movie but it does have messages about "teamwork, perseverance, friendship and facing your fears."

MY THOUGHTS

The House with a Clock in its Walls is part fantasy, part horror and part comedy. It's a supposed children's movie that might be too scary for your children so beware. Consider Common Sense Media's age recommendation from above, KNOW YOUR CHILDREN and pre-watch the movie if you are unsure

As an adult, I enjoyed way this movie was able to go, as one reviewer said, from "really funny to pretty freakin' scary" and I loved the house and all of its trappings. I think that this movie is just the sort of movie that might become a cult favorite in the way that Hocus Pocus, Halloweentown, Under Wraps and The Peanut Butter Solution have. Also a fun movie for adults who don't want a horrific horror film. I loved the baby scene!

BLU-RAY VERSION

With regard to the Blu-ray version, High-Def Digest says, "The enchanting fantasy flick casts its charm on Blu-ray with a mesmerizing picture quality, a reference-quality Dolby Atmos presentation and an enjoyable set of supplements" and gives it 3.5 stars. I will add that there is much to see in this film and Blu-ray shows it well.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Blu-ray Movie Review

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Blu-ray Movie Review

THE BEST VERSION OF DISNEY'S SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS IS ON BLU-RAY DISC.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was Walt Disney's first animated feature. In 1937 it was considered extremely unlikely that people would want to sit through a full-length animated movie. However, Disney spared no expense putting this movie together and it went on to great success and has stood the test of time extremely well. I am sure that Snow White is still hugely popular because of the wonderful music, which includes the highly unusual voice of Adriana Caselotti and the lovable characters and creatures.

If you are in the market for a copy of this legendary animated movie, you should definitely be considering one of the Blu-ray disc versions as that will present the movie in the best possible quality for home viewing and you will be happy to know that the Blu-ray release ranked very well for quality of picture, sound and extras.

On this page, you will find all of the Blu-ray choices that are available. You can choose from the more affordable, simple Blu-ray disc package like the Diamond edition (shown above) right up to the amazing gift sets, which include but are not limited to, the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Plush Gift Set and the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Limited Edition Collector's Set. You will also find the Blu-ray movie trailer, reviews from amateur and expert movie reviewers and much more.

Disney called Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs a 'limited time release' and put it back in the vault in 2011. However, if you are looking for a copy of Snow White on blu-ray or DVD it is still available on Amazon.

You can click here to see Amazon's collection of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs movies on blu-ray and DVD.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Blu-ray

DOES SNOW WHITE REALLY NEED AN INTRODUCTION?

We all know that Snow White is the earliest of Disney's princess who escaped from a jealous stepmother and took up house with a group of seven dwarfs. However, she eventually ate a poisoned apple from which she can only be revived from the spell by love's true kiss.

FAST FACTS

FOR WHAT AGE IS SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS RECOMMENDED?

Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs is definitely a movie classic. However, that does not make it suitable for all children. It is, as Commonsense Media says, enchanting but scary. They recommend Snow White for children aged five years old and up. The Movie Mom, in her book The Movie Mom's Guide to Family Movies, also recommends this movie for children aged five and up.

In case you do not remember, the frightening parts include many with the wicked queen, when Snow White is in the enchanted forest, when she eats the apple and when the Queen transforms into a hag. Don't forget, the Queen actually orders the huntsman to kill Snow White and return with her heart. Take this information in before you show it to your very young children.

Some might even dislike the basic approach of Snow White, that of young lady content to stay home and clean house until her prince comes for her.

Finally, the movie does not have narrative and relies on the use of pages from the storybook to share details of the story. Non-readers will require someone to read for them. This film is a marvel, however, and boasts a beautifully remastered video and some of the most famous Walt Disney music of all time.

REVIEWS FROM THE EXPERTS

Blu-ray.com says, "The 3-disc Blu-ray edition of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is a near-definitive release of the animated film that started it all. Its gorgeous restoration is simply the beginning. What follows is a glorious video transfer, a fit and faithful...

High-Def Digest says, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' is a lovely film that captures the heart and imagination of Walt Disney and what he was trying to achieve in the world of animation. It's a beautifully animated film that has been given new life with a fantastic...

AMAZON CUSTOMER REVIEWS

The Amazon customer reviews of Amazon include comments like the Blu-ray being simply brilliant. Dennis A. Amath was amazed that a 1937 class movie could look so vibrant and spectacular and said that Disney did a brilliant job of restoring and remastering the film. He found the picture "pristine." In more technical terms he called the "new lossless 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio" magnificent. Justice4all72 call the quality unbelievably good.

BLU-RAY STEELBOOK

Ever wondered what a SteelBook is? I did and recently learned that a SteelBook Case is one that is similar to an ordinary disc case but which is made out of metal making it much more durable and more attractive as well. Some collectors even prefer the more substantial feel of a SteelBook case in their hand. Often the SteelBook version of the movie features different artwork (as this from Snow White does) and sometimes that artwork is even embossed or dressed up in some way. This SteelBook set includes both Blu-ray and DVD discs. Find the Snow White SteelBook set on Amazon here.

Celine Dion's The Magic Man Video

Listen to the Magic Man is one of two English songs that Celine Dion performed for movie the The Peanut Butter Solution. This song and one called Michael's Song were Celine's first English language recordings. Here's an early music video featuring the song and the movie:

The Peanut Butter Solution Recipe for Baldness

The Peanut Butter Solution Recipe
I recently reposted my review of the 1985s movie, The Peanut Butter Solution, here on my movies blog and am also sharing this recipe, which does NOT come HIGHLY RECOMMENDED by me, LOL. Enjoy it at your own risk! It is posted simply for fun and not really intended to cure baldness. I think you will see why when you read the ingredient list.

The Peanut Butter Solution Recipe

Ingredients

1 really ripe banana
5 dead flies
1 rotten egg
3 licorice leaves
A fistful of kitty litter
3 Connie Crisps
3 Crosbie Crackers
9 spoons of soil
Glass of pepper's fizz
Spoonful of peanut butter

Instructions

Combine all ingredients in a blender and then put them on your head, being particularly careful not to add too much peanut butter. Also be cautious of getting the mixture on the rest of your body as hair will grow wherever the mixture lands.

Unfortunately, I have no idea where I originally found this recipe many, many years ago.

The Peanut Butter Solution Movie Review

What Happens When You Misuse The Peanut Butter Solution?

Bald is beautiful...unless you are a young boy who suffers a bad fright and has all of his hair suddenly fall out. That is the story in The Peanut Butter Solution, a rare movie from 1985, which is currently only available on VHS videotape and not on DVD, which is now available on eBay as a Blu-ray and DVD combo.

What follows the loss of his hair is both touching and humourous. It really is a serious problem when he loses his hair but he does not quite follow the recipe that he receives for curing baldness and adds too much peanut butter...bald might have been bad but once that hair started to grow...look out! What follows is a hairy mess and, as the cover says, "a hair-raising family adventure" that will make you laugh out loud.

On this page, find more information and reviews of The Peanut Butter Solution as well as sources for buying your own copy of the movie. And, just in case you want to try it out, you can find a Peanut Butter Solution (for baldness) recipe here.

The Peanut Butter Solution Story Line

"Michael is an 11-year old who investigates a supposedly haunted house that has recently burned down. What he sees scares him so badly that he faints, and on top of that, two days later all of his hair falls out. A couple of ghosts give him a magic recipe to make his hair grow back, but Michael puts too much of one of the ingredients - peanut butter - in the concoction and astonishing results occur!"

Reviews of The Peanut Butter Solution

The Peanut Butter Solution MovieYES! The Peanut Butter Solution Is Really a Movie! The Peanut Butter Solution was not a figment of your imagination.

It is a movie that people remember vaguely and leave comments online like: I can't believe this was actually a real movie!, "I thought this movie was just a dream..." and, "Wow. It was actually real."

People have spent years trying to figure out what this weird movie was that they remember watching as a child. A movie in which a boy lost his hair and used something to grow it back. When they finally figure out that it was this movie, they feel better. One writer said, "There should be a society called The Peanut Butter Solution Viewers Anonymous... for those who saw this movie who were haunted by it and told that it doesn't exist".

Canuxploitation said"The Peanut Butter Solution has proven it has just enough of an eccentric Dr. Seuss touch to permanently wedge itself in the memories of young viewers. Watching it again today, the film holds up generally well, despite some dated special effects."

Dark Angel Movie Review (2016)

I love many PBS Masterpiece productions and sat down with my husband to watch DARK ANGEL not quite knowing what I was getting into. When you watch this show, you need to know that this film is based on the true story of Britain's first female serial killer. Knowing that fact lets you know that what you are about to see is not a lovely, uplifting film but rather a very dark one and helps make sense of the number of deaths that occur fairly early in the film.

Joanne Froggatt, who played lady's maid Anna Bates on Downton Abbey, plays the notorious Victorian poisoner Mary Ann Cotton who was raised in the northeast England coal fields.

RECOMMENDED? Yes, I will recommend this film for fans of period pieces and the history of Britain. Be aware that there is sexual content and multiple deaths though not of the bloody and gory kind they but rather the violent result of arsenic poisoning.

How many people did the real life Mary Ann Cotton kill? The tally is not and will never be known though it is thought to be between 13 and 21. We lost count in the movie of the total number of people she killed in the film version of her story.

Don't Look Now (1973) Movie Review

Don't Look Now Movie Review

Don’t Look Now is a 1973 psychological or psychic thriller, a horror movie that is full of suspense rather than a lot of gore. This film stars Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie. The Guardian considers this to be amongst the top five performances given by Sutherland and Christie, like Sutherland, has a long list of credits to her name that include Doctor Zhivago, Finding Neverland and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Don't Look Now Movie Bedroom Scene
Don’t Look Now is set in Venice, Italy an “elegantly decaying city," words that certainly depict the Venice you see in this movie. Shot in the wintertime, Venice is abandoned, gray and miserable. Watching this film gives you a good idea of what the layout of Venice is like in terms of canals, walkways and bridges but it will do little to make you want to visit the city.

Don't Look Now Movie Venice Canal Scene Venice is the third star in this movie, lending exactly the right atmosphere with plenty of dead ends and wrong turns to create the perfect atmosphere and set. Roger Ebert  said that could not picture this film set anywhere else and I agree and The Guardian calls the Venice of this movie mysterious and exotic and untouristy. Once again, I agree.

Don't Look Now tells the story of a couple struggling to get past the death of a child who relocate to Venice and chance to meet two weird sisters, one of whom is psychic. These women appear throughout the movie in a haunting fashion but beware for as the movie tagline says, “Things are not what they seem.”

Here’s the original movie trailer, which has no spoilers in it.

What is there to object to?

This movie is rated R for Restricted so there is a lot to be aware of. There is an accidental death, an extended sex scene and a nasty murder with blood but the movie is really more suspenseful than gory. There is drinking and smoking.

As I expected when we were watching the movie, the sex scene was very controversial in its time. It might be important to note that, although lengthy, the scene is meant to be the beautiful coming together of two married adults who had drifted apart. The Guardian  considers the sex scene to be one of the ten best because of the “emotional freight” that comes with it.

Recommended?

The case for this movie says that Don’t Look Now is as renowned “for its innovative editing and haunting cinematography as it is for its naturalistic eroticism and unforgettable climax and denouement” and that it is considered one of the great endings in horror movie history.

In 2002, Roger Ebert said this movie “remains one of the great horror masterpieces” elaborating by saying, that it “works not with fright, which is easy, but with dread, grief and apprehension.” Exactly.

Don't Look Now Movie SceneI chose this movie because it was set in Venice and it definitely turned out to be an interesting choice though not perhaps in the way I thought it might. With the warnings mentioned in the preceding paragraph, I would recommend this movie for those who want something different and who are interested in the history of cinema. It does give a peek into the workings of Venice but is definitely not a great travelogue for the city.

Blu-ray.com  praises Criterion for the quality of the digital restoration so if you buy this movie, you probably should buy the Criterion Collection version, which will also allow you to watch the special features and learn more about how this movie was made and why it is important to the history of cinematography.

Here’s the trailer for the Criterion reissue in which you will definitely be able to see the improvement of quality from that of the original trailer, which was shown above.

Don’t Look Now is based on a short story by Daphne du Maurier. If you are a reader, it might be a movie to check out in print form prior to or even after watching the movie. Because it was a short story, the movie provides more story than the author's version. You can learn more about or buy your copy of the Criterion Collection's version on Amazon by clicking right here.

By the way, The Guardian and other sources online say that  Don’t Look Now is being remade. Given the nature of the story and it’s position as one of Britain’s finest horror stories, there is considerable scepticism about whether this is the appropriate type of movie for a remake. If you watch the film or have seen it, I am sure you will understand why it might be hard to successfully remake this movie.

Will you be watching or reading Don't Look Now? If you have seen it, what did you think? Finally, what do you think of the idea of a remake this movie?

See you

All Roads Lead to Rome (2015)

Last night we watched another Italy-themed movie. All Roads Lead to Rome (2015) stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Rosie Day, Raoul Bova (The Tourist, Under the Tuscan Sun) and Claudia Cardinale (an Italian actress.) It is a romantic comedy that starts off in the beautiful Italian countryside and arrives, after an adventuresome journey, in Rome hence the title All Roads Lead to Rome.

The movie was a light and entertaining film, definitely not the best romantic com ever but an enjoyable film with not much to object to. No sex although there is reference to a teen’s unhealthy relationship, some social drinking, marijuana use once and infrequent swearing. The movie is rated PG 13 and that seems like a good guideline to me.

While we did finally arrive in Rome (in the movie), it showed some highlights of the city. However, this would not be my top pick as an Italian-themed movie to enhance your enjoyment of an upcoming or a reminder of a past trip to Italy and Rome. There were a few, “I’ve been there!” moments but overall I felt that the movie did not really do a fabulous job of displaying Rome.

Would I recommend it? Yes, as I said for a light movie. However, I’d pick Letters to Juliet or Under the Tuscan Sun first. You can read more about All Roads Lead to Rome on Amazon by clicking here.

Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them Movie Review

Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them Movie Review

Kudos to J.K. Rowling and all of the folks at Warner Brothers who brought to life Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them on the big screen in November of 2016.  I went to the movie with trepidation. Would this new movie live up to the expectation of the fans and the reputation of the Harry Potter series books and movies?  I should not have worried; I totally enjoyed the movie. I don't often want to revisit a movie especially immediately after the fact but this is one that I could easily go and see again right away and I am betting that many fans feel the same way.  Fantastic Beasts really was that good.

The movie left me wondering if someone who was not plugged into the Harry Potter franchise would enjoy it as much as the rest of us did and I am not sure. Newcomers might but they definitely would not understand all of the insider references.  Since there are four more Fantastic Beasts movies to come, if you are keen and unacquainted, you might want to go back and read the Harry Potter books and then watch the movies.

Highlights for me were many but I know I laughed out loud quite a few times. I came away wanting some Gigglewater and a certain special umbrella for Christmas.  Gigglewater is a wizarding alcoholic beverage that may cause you to laugh out loud when you drink it though apparently it is a real term from the 1920s.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is an enjoyable film, well done, that sets us up for four more stories.  Eddie Redmayne is outstanding as Newt Scamander, Dan Fogler is a good pairing as the no-maj Jacob Kowalski and Colin Farrell is good when he appears as Percival Graves, Director of Magical Security.  I also particularly enjoyed the sister characters, Porpentina Goldstein as played by Katherine Waterston and Queenie Goldstein as played by Alison Sudol.

OFFICIAL MOVIE TRAILER

You likely don't need it but just in case you do, here is the final trailer for the movie.

MOVIE RATING

Fantastic Beasts is rated PG13. The Movie Mom says that it is given that rating based on fantasy action violence and she recommends it for middle school aged children. I think that is reasonable and this movie comes HIGHLY RECOMMENDED by me particularly if you are involved in Harry Potter's world.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 Movie Review

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 Movie Review

I recently watched The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 and was once again enchanted by the story, which stars Amber Tamblyn, America Ferrera, Blake Lively and Alexis Bledel. It's a lovely film that features a pair of magical blue jeans. (I do love my denim.)

This 2008 movie takes place a year after the first. It finds Tibby, Bridget, Lena and Carmen following their own lives apart for the summer but still planning on sharing the jeans. Carmen will be working behind the scenes putting together a play in Vermont, Lena will be in an art class, Bridget will be doing archaeology work in Turkey and Tibby will be working in a movie rental store.

Anyone remember when you used to go to the store to rent a movie on VHS tape? I date myself as I digress. Anyway, here's a peek at the story via the official movie trailer and Youtube:

Of course, life is not so simple and the girls are reminded of how important their friendship really is. Much more so than a pair of blue jeans, which take less of a starring role in this movie.

What's to object to in this movie? Well, not much if you are an adult. If you are a teen girl or considering this movie for a teen girl, you need to be aware that there is a sexual situation that is not actually enacted on screen but is referenced and discussed. There's a nude model posing for painters although he is not revealed and there are references to lost loved ones including a suicide. I have tried to pick the most important issues but for a complete list visit IMDB's Parental Guide here.

An aside from someone who loves denim, I smiled at the innocent or maybe not so innocent product placement of Levi's iconic red tab on the cover of the first movie. Did you notice?

A bit of poking around shows that The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 1 and 2 are available in many options. I like the set that includes both the first movie and the second movie as shown below and available on Amazon by clicking right here. I think that it would make a great gift idea for someone who appreciates light-hearted, fun movies like this one and who also loves blue jeans. To create a gift set, I would package the movies with a pair of blue jeans - Levi's or otherwise - with some pretty patches to embellish them with and give them to a teenage girl or to any woman who appreciates blue jeans and a sweet movie. You could even include a copy of the book for a really complete gift set! You can see all of your choices for buying The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants on Amazon here.

Harry Potter Clue Game Review

Harry Potter Clue Game Review
Play Clue Harry Potter Edition For Family Friendly Harry Potter Themed Gaming Fun

"A neat and different version of Clue that should please Clue and Harry Potter fans alike. But thanks to the House Point aspect, it's the first version of Clue I've seen where so many people lose before the game is over!" - Rubeus Hagrid

Finally, I can say that I HAVE played the Harry Potter Clue game and that I have LOVED it. (And not just because I won, either!) During our first game, Aunt Robin drank a potion that she shouldn't have and was dead before she knew what had happened and then, my son was taken out by a fire-breathing dragon, leaving me the winner. I hadn't yet solved the mystery of who kidnapped Neville Longbottom but I'm sure I would have eventually.

Harry Potter Clue is a fantastic board game and quite probably as one of the best Harry Potter games. It was on my Christmas wish list and I was thrilled when my teenage boys received it from their Grandparents. The magic and mystery of Hogwarts IS the perfect setting for a Clue game and all of the characters, potions, spells and locations are familiar to Harry Potter fans. The game was fun and it lived up to all the wonderful reviews I had read about it.

Harry Potter Clue is recommended for individuals 9 years of age and up.

Harry Potter Clue Game Review
What Is Harry Potter Clue About?

In Harry Potter Clue, you discover the secrets of Hogwarts. A student has disappeared and you have to solve the disappearance. The game is played by moving around the board and making suggestions but, as you might expect at Hogwarts, you have to be careful of wheels that reveal secret passages, hidden staircases and even the Dark Mark. In the end, you must go to Dumbledore's office to make your accusation. Amazon says that "kids love taking on the roles of their favorite characters." Not only did my son love doing so but I did, too!

Harry Potter Clue Reviews

Amazon customer reviewer Isabella says she likes this game better than the original version of Clue because of the different twists.

Janis says that this game is different because of the house points that can end the game when you least expect it. She lets us know that you don’t have to be a Harry Potter to enjoy the game but, of course, fans will enjoy it even more. It’s a game of skill and luck and definitely recommended by Janis.

Christopher Ingle says he wasn’t keen to play a remake of Clue but that once he had played he was hooked.

I agree with all of those reviews and can highly recommend this game.  It is a fabulous idea for a Christmas or birthday present for any Harry Potter fan or for your HP collection.

You can find a Harry Potter Clue game from Amazon by clicking here. There are a few versions available and you may have to look on eBay to find the one shown here on this page.

Max Movie Review: A Solid Dog-Themed Family Movie (2015)

Max Movie Review: A Solid Dog-Themed Family Movie (2015)
My husband takes credit for bringing home this very good dog movie. It's an intense adventure with the lead role going to Max - Best Friend. Hero. Marine.

I watched this movie without knowing a single thing about it, which made it pretty wrenching and I find it is impossible to review it without giving away critical details that are actually spoilers.  If that concerns you, turn back now, before it is too late. If you would rather know what you are in for, read on.

------------------------------------------

Max is the story of a military dog and his family. It takes you to Afghanistan where you witness some of the conflict going on there. When things go wrong there for his unit and his handler, the dog is returned to Texas where the only person he is able to relate to is his handler's unwilling teenage brother Justin.

You can get a feel for the movie by watching the official movie trailer here:

Max stars Josh Wiggins, Lauren Graham, Thomas Haden Church, Robbie Amell and Joseph Julian Soria. I spent considerable minutes trying to figure out where I knew Lauren Graham from and my husband filled in the blanks, she is from the Gilmore Girls.

What to Watch Out For?

Max is rated PG - Parental Guidance. It is an intense movie with lots of peril and action though obviously not in the way a major action movie rated PG-14 or more might be. Having said that, it does have violence including wartime events, characters killed and dogfights and it is sad.

Indeed, it has some very sad moments as well as very happy moments and remember, a dog is involved. Some dog lovers find it impossible to watch a dog movie in which a dog might be harmed. If you want to know what happens to Max in this movie, leave me a comment and I will send you a private message rather than give away the story here. Either way, you are going to need a big box of tissue on hand for there will be lots of tears shed on screen and off.  The Movie Mom recommends this movie for fourth graders and up, which sounds reasonable to me.

Recommended?

YES! The critics did not seem to like Max but the audiences did. Max is an old style family movie but some found the plot a bit disjointed. In any case, we thoroughly enjoyed it. Max is a solid dog movie with a look at the life of a working dog. It has action, adventure and loss as well as a bit of romance and comedy.

I think that Max would be a great gift for anyone who loves dogs. You can buy or rent Max from Amazon by clicking right here.  If you buy it, be sure to watch the special features to understand some of the process that goes into making a movie that stars a dog.

The Martian Movie Review

The Martian impressed. Learn more about this movie including what you might need to be aware of and watch the official movie trailer.

We watched The Martian last night and I was impressed. Matt Damon presents a thoughtful and of course brilliant astronaut named Mark Watney stranded and alone on Mars.  In some ways it is a quiet movie, thought provoking and interesting.

I enjoyed Watney's approach to solving the problems set before him one at a time until you reach the desired end. I particularly enjoyed his wit. Have you tried being funny when you are alone? Finally, I enjoyed his never-give-up attitude. I believe that his way of thinking and reacting are ones that many of us can use in life though I do not really think this movie was meant to teach us a lesson.

The Martian is based on a book of the same name by Andy Weir, which I am given to understand by one of my sons, is a very good read.

Take a peek at the movie here via the official movie trailer from 20th Century Fox:

WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR?

The movie is rated PG-13. In terms of what to watch out for, I do not think there is much to put off an adult viewer. There is a sense of peril throughout much of the movie. There's an occasional swear word delivered in a less than totally offensive manner.  There is an injury requiring a medical fix. I'm not crazy about seeing blood and I did look away during this spot of the film but I would recommend you not let this moment turn you away from watching this film. There's also brief nudity showing the backside of the lead character. I see that the Movie Mom recommends this movie for middle schoolers, which sounds pretty reasonable to me.

RECOMMENDED

The Martian Movie ReviewYes. For sure. The Martian is an excellent film. I am no space expert so I cannot say how well it represents what life would be like on Mars but it certainly will make you think about what it might be like to visit that faraway planet. If you need any further recommendation to watch this movie, you might consider that The Martian was nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Motion Picture of the Year and Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role. Pretty impressive even if it did not win.

You can buy or rent the movie right now from Amazon by clicking right here. I do think that the book and the movie would make a fabulous gift set for anyone who enjoys a well crafted, space themed movie.

Austenland Movie Review

Visit Jane Austen's World Via The Movie Austenland

The movie version of the book Austenland by Shannon Hale was released on August 16, 2013. I really enjoyed the book so I was anxious to see the movie but, alas, the movie turned out to be somewhat limited in distribution. It never made it to my local movie theatre although it did have a short run in another area of my home city, Ottawa. Anyway, I missed it at the movie theatre and it was not until after it was released on blu-ray disc and DVD on February 11, 2014 that I had the opportunity to watch it.

I wound up watching it while my husband was away. It would definitely not have been his first choice of movie and your man might not be keen on seeing it either. Anyway, I found it quite entertaining.

Austenland is a lightweight comedy starring Keri Russell, J.J. Field and Jennifer Coolidge. It shares the story of a young American woman who is unlucky in love and who embraces all things to do with Jane Austen and her books. Finding no real man who meets her standards, this young lady has even managed to fall in love with the fictional Mr. Darcy.

Desperate to make a change in her life, she books an expensive vacation at a Jane Austen getaway in England. At this resort, she will don clothing authentic to the period of Jane Austen's books and give up all modern conveniences and devices. Yes, she must even turn in her cellphone. She will live exactly as the women in the books did...more or less and the proprietor of the resort, played by Jane Seymour, guarantees that each guest will experience a love affair. Each women who visits Austenland has an actor assigned to fall in love with her.

The movie is funny and, like the book, it is light entertainment but if you love stories like Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility and Emma, you ought to like this movie. If you think it would be fun to try out living in the time frame of Jane Austen's England by enjoying fine dinners, going to balls and being swept off your feet, you ought to try out this movie first! Don't forget that life was not all good food and parties in that time period it also included things like corsets, endless hours of needlework and rules, lots and lots of rules about how a young lady must behave.

Here's a peek via the official two-minute movie trailer:

In terms of what to watch out for in this movie, there is some suggestive content and innuendo, some language, drinking and drunkenness. However, as an adult viewer, I was never uncomfortable watching this film and I would RECOMMEND it to my female friends who enjoy period fiction and romantic comedy.

Aloha (2015) Hawaiian Movie Review

Aloha (2015) Hawaiian Movie Review

Because I am busy, I have noticed a tendency to NOT get around to posting about the movies that I have seen despite the fact that this is a movies blog. Therefore, I have decided to start writing shorter movie reviews that include a brief idea of the plot, the movie’s official trailer, what to watch out for, whether or not I would recommend the movie and who I would recommend it for. I hope YOU will find this new format helpful when you are looking for your next movie and that it motivates ME to post about the great and not-so-great movies that I have seen in a more regular manner.

Anyway, the 2015 movie Aloha is the first up with this format in mind.  I am a big fan of Hawaii and have had the opportunity to visit twice so any movie with Hawaii as a backdrop definitely appeals to me.

Aloha is a romantic comedy that stars Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone and Rachel McAdams and that also has interesting appearances by Bill Murray and Alec Baldwin. That's a lot of star power in one movie. The story is that of a military contractor who meets up with a long lost girlfriend but falls for the Air Force pilot assigned to escort him while he is in Honolulu, Hawaii. The trailer fills you in a bit more:

The movie is rated PG-13 for some language including suggestive comments. As an adult, I found that language not terribly offensive. It was a small part of the movie. It has a non-explicit sexual situation and references and some alcohol, once again not offensive to me.

I would RECOMMEND this movie to anyone who enjoys a good romantic comedy. It is not perhaps the best one ever made but it is beautiful and Cooper and Stone had us laughing out loud quite a few times.

I would love to go back to Hawaii and stay airbnb style in the Christmas-kitschy house that starred in this movie.

See you
at the movies!

Under Wraps Movie Review

Under Wraps: A Disney Channel Original and a Hallmark Halloween Movie that's not too scary!

As an eBay seller, I seek out unusual, out-of-the-ordinary movies to sell. In 2013, I came across a move called Under Wraps and I carried it home, curious about it for two reasons. Firstly, because it had a mummy on the cover and children in the pictures, it seemed like it might be a family friendly Halloween movie and be a worthy addition to my page about not-too-scary movies for tweens and secondly, because it was a joint Disney Channel and Hallmark Entertainment movie both of whom produce made-for-television movies that I enjoy.

Under Wraps is a 1997 movie in which three 12-year old children discover and befriend a 3,000-year old mummy. They accidentally set him free but feel obligated to see him safely returned to his sarcophagus by midnight on Halloween so that he won't ** poof ** become a pile of dust.

Under Wraps stars three child actors: Adam Wylie from the Gilmore Girls, Clara Bryant from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Corinne Bohrer from Veronica Mars. Making an appearance as the bad guy Kabut, is Ed Lauter who has appeared in an endless number of television programs and movies during his career. I recognized his face immediately, perhaps from the movie Seabiscuit.

It is definitely a tween or pre-teen friendly movie. The opening scene, set in a movie theatre with two of the main characters watching a horror movie, was the scariest part but is over fairly quickly and I believe it is just the type of scare that your tweens might be looking for. The scene features a gross looking monster attacking a dad in the kitchen. I won't say more for fear of spoiling a moment for you but I will say that it was more intense than I was anticipating but no blood is shown. After that initial fright, there is some sense of scariness woven throughout the movie and a whole lot of screaming, all interwoven with humour. It is a good movie for older children who are not ready for true horror movies as it is part horror movie and part comedy movie.

Disney's Under Wraps Movie has become a cult favorite. A fun movie with a Halloween theme that is not too scary!

Under Wraps Movie Trailer

SPOILER ALERT

Don't watch this trailer if you don't want your surprise to be ruined. However, if you want to understand the nature of the scary scene, do watch it. It's a slightly long review at 5-minutes but perhaps necessary if you want to decide whether or not to show this film to your children. Honestly, though if I wanted to enjoy the movie and was previewing this trailer for my children, I'd stop after the initial scene (set in the movie theatre) because this is not just a trailer but a full review of the entire movie with scenes shown all the way to the end. I agree with the reviewer that the opening scene is the scariest part of the movie.

Have You Seen Under Wraps? Are You Wondering Where You Can Buy It?

Now I have to impart the bad news. Although this movie was once readily and affordably available, it is not anymore. It can be very expensive because the demand for it is much greater than the supply.   If you are looking to buy it, I recommend you check the current pricing on Amazon by clicking right here and on eBay by clicking here. You might be lucky and find a copy of the movie that is priced reasonably. However, it is more likely you will find one that stretches your budget or that you might not find one at all.  Good luck to you if you are looking to add a copy of this movie to your collection.

Pricing aside, I think Under Wraps is an enjoyable if somewhat dated movie worth adding to your collection especially if you remember watching it on the Disney Channel when you were younger. It will make you smile. I watched it again recently and even though I was alone I laughed out loud.

How about you? Have you seen Under Wraps? Would you recommend it? Be sure to leave us a comment and let us know what you think about Under Wraps.

See you
at the movies!
