MICHAEL JACKSON'S VISION

MTV and Michael Jackson arrived on the North American scene at pretty much the same time and they were perfectly suited to each other. Jackson used MTV from the very beginning to share his visual style and his music where people could hear and see his music. He started thinking of his songs as scripts and created stories out of them and called them 'short films' rather than 'music videos.'

The first music video to be initiated into the Library of Congress National Film Registry was Michael Jackson's Thriller. That song had a huge impact at the time of its release. I remember staying home the night that video was released to watch it on television and being totally amazed by it.

Michael Jackson's Vision was released on November 22, 2010. It contains all 35 of Michael's videos that were created when he was working as a solo performer. Ten of them appear on DVD for the first time ever. The videos have been restored and remastered so that you will get the best audio and visual impact from them. I was suitably impressed with the special other than the fact that I disliked the product placement. It was a fun show and it was intense. Jessie never gave up and that is what Combat Carl would advise you if you are ever in a difficult situation. If I had to complain, I would say only that it was too short. It was over before before we were ready for it to be over!

FOR WHAT AGE IS SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS RECOMMENDED?

Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs is definitely a movie classic. However, that does not make it suitable for all children. It is, as Commonsense Media says, enchanting but scary. They recommend Snow White for children aged five years old and up. The Movie Mom, in her book The Movie Mom's Guide to Family Movies, also recommends this movie for children aged five and up.

In case you do not remember, the frightening parts include many with the wicked queen, when Snow White is in the enchanted forest, when she eats the apple and when the Queen transforms into a hag. Don't forget, the Queen actually orders the huntsman to kill Snow White and return with her heart. Take this information in before you show it to your very young children.

Some might even dislike the basic approach of Snow White, that of young lady content to stay home and clean house until her prince comes for her.

Finally, the movie does not have narrative and relies on the use of pages from the storybook to share details of the story. Non-readers will require someone to read for them.This film is a marvel, however, and boasts a beautifully remastered video and some of the most famous Walt Disney music of all time.

Ever wondered what a SteelBook is? I did and recently learned that a SteelBook Case is one that is similar to an ordinary disc case but which is made out of metal making it much more durable and more attractive as well. Some collectors even prefer the more substantial feel of a SteelBook case in their hand. Christmas of Many Colors (2016) Movie Review

I think that Dolly Parton's Christmas of Many Colors Circle of Love is an excellent movie. It comes HIGHLY RECOMMENDED by me if you are in search of a family friendly movie with a heartwarming story of hard work and sacrifice.

Set in 1955 in Tennessee's Great Smokey Mountains where Dolly Parton was raised, it continues Parton's story and follows on another successful made-for-television movie that I have not seen yet called A Coat of Many Colors.

In this film, we meet a struggling family with eight children and some members of the rest of their community, including my favorite, a very supportive and well established 26-year old 'old maid' school teacher and the preacher grandfather.

The family lives in a small rudimentary cabin and the school teacher in a cute little 1950s home with all the luxuries of middle class including indoor plumbing and the electronics of the time. All are fascinating for Dolly and quite a contrast with her family's home.

The family and members of the community work together in various ways in order to allow the father to gift the mother with the only thing that she wants.

The real Dolly Parton makes cameo appearances as a woman of possibly questionable morals. Since our moments with her are very brief, her profession is never truly established.

Alyvia Alyn Lind takes on the role of  Dolly. You might recognize this young actress for her recurring role in the program Young and the Restless. Other actors I recognized include Ricky Schroder, Jennifer Nettles (actually a country music singer) and Gerald McRaney.

The New York Post calls the movie cliche and "contrived, especially as it leads to a series of near-disasters that can only be erased by another series of convenient miracles." I will agree with that statement but add that I do not think that it matters. 

USA Today says, "enjoy this movie for the message, the music and Parton's benevolent spirit." . 

A Christmas of Many Colors is a beautiful faith-based film that is full of hope and joy and peril and yes, humor, too. It is perfect for Christmas viewing by all, and it is an emotional roller coaster that will have you laughing and crying. It is predictable at points but it is perfectly enjoyable and very entertaining. As I said earlier, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED by me. It is the best Christmas movie I have seen in awhile.

At the real Dolly Parton says at the end of the movie, "Hold your families close at Christmas. Love and accept each other. And always be kind." Thanks, Dolly.

The Peanut Butter Solution Blu-ray DVD Combo Release

Those who have long wanted to rewatch The Peanut Butter Solution will be pleased to discover that the 1985 movie has finally been released on DVD and Blu-ray disc.  For years, the only option for watching this movie was a very dated VHS videotape. A choice which, because of rarity, had become expensive and necessitated the owning of a VCR.

For fun, here's a peek at the movie the movie trailer:

It is a French Canadian release, which explains the confusing text on the cover. However, both the blu-ray and the DVD disc have a copy of the movie in English and in French so you can buy it knowing you will be able to view it in the language you prefer. Also included in the case is a small booklet with pictures from the movie. Unfortunately, the text within that booklet is only in French.

Fantastic Beasts Release Date on DVD & Blu-ray Disc

In my world Harry Potter fans were totally pleased with the movie  Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them when it was finally released in the movie theatres on November 18, 2016 and now there is another date to be excited about. I know that fans have been waiting and asking when will the DVD and Blu-ray disc for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them be released?

According to HDRoom, you will be able to start watching some versions of Fantastic Beasts at home on March 7, 2017 though they do not say which formats will be available on that date.  However, they go on to say that the release date for Digital HD, DVD, Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray versions is March 28, 2017, timed to coincide with a new Harry Potter 4K release.

Beauty and the Beast 25th Anniversary Edition Release Date

Of course, with the upcoming live animated version, Disney will be re-releasing Beauty and the Beast. It will come to us in the form of a 25th Anniversary Edition and I know that it will be met with open arms because of the enduring popularity of this Disney classic.

Beauty and the Beast, first released in 1991, was nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Picture in 1992 and the animation department won a Scientific and Technical Academy Award for designing the Computer Animated Production System used in the making of the film.

The release date for the Blu-ray and DVD is September 20 though the movie will be available on Digital HD and Disney Movies Anywhere on September 6. The Blu-ray release shown above will include Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD versions. Run time for the movie is 92 minutes but there appear to be hours of special features. Beauty and the Beast was a beautifully made movie. I cannot wait to see what Disney does with the the 25th Anniversary Edition this fall and then the live action version in 2017. You?

Zootopia Blu-ray Movie

Well, it's here. Disney's Zootopia was released on Blu-ray, DVD and of course, Amazon Instant Video on June 7, 2016.  Is it a movie you will be adding to your collection?

Zootopia's success took some people by surprise. Mashable says that Zootopia was number 1 in its opening box office take, surpassing even the hugely successful movie Frozen. The movie was also successful globally, with the critics and the movie going public all of which are definitely reasons to look closer at this movie if you have not already done so.

I have long watched Jeremy Jahns's reviews though I have not seen one in a while. I am glad to say his review of Zootopia is family friendly although he is promoting a product. If you ignore that promotion, I think you will like what he has to say about Zootopia:

 

Jahns says the movie is definitely worth watching for children and for adults as it is funny but also carrys a message and that it is definitely worth watching on blu-ray disc.

Blu-ray.com also highly recommends the blu-ray release, saying "Disney's Blu-ray 2D release of Zootopia yields the expectedly gorgeous 1080p video and top-notch 7.1 lossless soundtrack."

High-Def Digest says, "This Blu-ray has some stellar video, some very strong audio, and a healthy portion of extras. 'Zootopia' is highly recommended."

Star Trek (2009) Blu-ray Movie

I grew up with the Star Trek franchise. That is, with Captain Kirk, Spock and the rest of the crew of the Starship Enterprise. Star Trek was a series that our family watched once a week and, when the series was over, we watched the episodes in reruns for many years so there was no question that I would be going to see the movie when it was released in 2009.

Guess what? I loved it. As a matter of fact, when I left the movie theatre, I proclaimed it, "THE BEST MOVIE THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN." Pretty strong words, don’t you think? I have no idea if that is the truth or not, but that was definitely how I was feeling about that movie at that moment. It was packed with action and adventure and even some emotion. It had funny moments and insider references, good acting and a great storyline. I loved the movie and when the Blu-ray version was released, I loved it, too.

But don’t take my word for it…

The Movie Plot in 100-ish Words

Star Trek (2009) is both a prequel and a reboot. A movie for Star Trek fans and for those who have never seen a single Star Trek movie, this movie documents the maiden voyage of a spaceship, the U.S.S. Enterprise. It features new crew members who attempt to stop an evil entity that threatens all of mankind. James Kirk is an impulsive Iowa farm boy and Spock a logical man who throws off emotion. Their partnership is unlikely but their clash of instinct and reason proves powerful enough to guide us all through their mission, taking us "boldly where no one has gone before."

The Amazon customer reviews about the movie itself are complimentary. Writer D. Ferrari said that this movie really felt like Star Trek to him. He said it has the attitude he expected. Reviewer Konrad Kern said that you will love this movie regardless of whether you are a Trekkie fan.

Blu-ray.com said that the Blu-ray release “features impeccable picture and sound quality and a complete, thoroughly informative and consistently entertaining supplemental package.” They went on to give it their HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.

One Amazon customer said, “You will be letting yourself down if you like Star Trek, have a Blu-ray player but don't buy this movie" and, once again, I agree.

There are some pretty interesting boxed sets that include this movie available any of which would make a great gift idea for the Trekkie who does not already own this movie on Blu-ray disc. Of course, the longer a special boxed set like the ones shown here with the U.S.S. Enterprise replica metal model or with the collectible badges has been around, the harder to find and the more expensive they become.
