THE LOVE LIFE OF ELIZABETH TAYLOR AND RICHARD BURTON
Liz & Dick celebrates the scandal and the marriage of the century. It tells the rocky story of the love between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. The story was written by Christopher Monger and stars Lindsay Lohan as Elizabeth Taylor and Grant Bowler as Richard Burton and premiered as a made-for-television movie on Lifetime on November 25, 2012.
Despite a story that still mesmerizes people today, the movie was not so warmly received. I watched it and would have to agree with the majority of comments that it was not a very successful movie. However, if you are a big fan of either Taylor or Burton, you might want to give it a watch anyway...
The Hollywood Reporter says that "it should come as no great surprise that Lifetime’s Liz & Dick movie starring Lindsay Lohan is spectacularly bad. After all, it’s Lohan, more memorable in the tabloids than she ever was as an actress.
On Huff Post, Maureen Ryan says, "Oh Lord, What Have They Done?" It's easy to come up with a list of a few things a movie about Elizabeth Taylor-Richard Burton should do and this movie does absolutely none of these things. All it really does is make you sad about what's become of Lindsay Lohan.
The New Yorker says that Lohan is now in the unenviable position of the classic cartoon character who dashes over the edge of the cliff and stays in midair, spinning her legs madly but not falling, and, of all things, the flimsy and inadequate platform called “Liz and Dick”
Finally, Emma G Keller says on The Guardian that Lohan made this Taylor biopic her own elaborating by saying Lindsay Lohan's performance as Elizabeth Taylor was universally panned, but it saw art imitate life to perfection.

No doubt that if you are reading this page you are already aware of the popular 1985 children’s book, The Polar Express. THE MOVIE WITH TOM HANKS
In 2004, The Polar Express was made into an animated movie that was the first all-digital capture film ever made. The film starred Daryl Sabara, Nona Gaye, Jimmy Bennett, and Eddie Deezen and featured Tom Hanks in six different roles. It was released on DVD in 2005.
The Polar Express story presented in the movie remains true to the book, including the bittersweet ending:

If followed the huge success and the triumphant return of The Muppets with the movie, The Muppets, you know exactly how enduring and popular The Muppets are. This 2015 calendar though no longer appropriate for use as a calendar would make an excellent collector's item for someone who loves The Muppets and the movies.

Moana was the movie of choice, my choice that is, on our recent Friday Movie Night. My husband traveled with me to Polynesia willingly I must say. Armchair travel. Who would have thought there would be a day when this was the only way to travel?
Anyway, Moana was a movie that I wanted to see when it came out because it felt Hawaiian and I love everything about Hawaii. However, being empty nesters with no little people around, we tend now to miss animated movies when they arrive at the movie theatre and then, well, there are just so many great movies and programs to watch that Moana slipped out of sight for awhile. I am happy to say that I have finally seen it and that I was not disappointed. I thoroughly enjoyed our trip. It was a great escape from the virus and pandemic that is gripping the world as I write this post on March 23, 2020.
STORYLINE
A fictional mythological story done with computer-generated animation, Moana tells the tale of a teenage princess who stands up to protect her people when a fiery demon threatens them. She loves the ocean and sets out upon it learning navigational skills as she goes. Helping here is the demi-god Maui who was the original creator of the Pacific Islands. Together they sail onward, fighting difficulties as they look for the particular island she will conclude her mission.
Moana is a princess, the daughter of a Chieftain. However, she does not think of herself as a princess. She certainly does not fit the stereotype and definitely does not need rescuing. She is a strong, curvy girl with a mission. The Guardian aptly puts it when they say that "Moana is the story of a female leader-in-waiting who is independent and progressive, who cares about the environment and who looks beyond the borders of her homeland to face the challenges of the future." I say don't get in Moana's way!

LOVE INTEREST
This princess movie does not feature a love interest. The New York Times says, the Disney princess tradition continues to be charming (in this movie) but also widens "its cultural frame of reference and allows heroines to travel down paths other than the one leading straight to matrimony." There are important men in Moana's story but they are family and friend and one of the strongest characters is most fittingly, the ocean.
HEI HEI
Another, ah, interesting character is the ridiculous chicken sidekick named Hei Hei. He stuck out to me in the beginning as totally over the top but, in the end, he was definitely part of the fun. (Find your plush Hei Hei on Amazon by clicking right here.)
REVIEWS
As Roger Ebert says, this Disney movie has "dazzling visuals, catchy tunes, enjoyable performances, clever running gags and overall sense of fun." I agree. If you did not already want to go to Polynesia or Hawaii, this movie will make you want to go. It was beautifully done and a lot of fun. As always, I particularly loved the humorous moments.
The Verge says, "After 80 years of experiments, Disney has made the perfect Disney movie." That will give you a pretty good idea of the reception that this movie had. Moana follows the Disney formula but it is brilliantly executed.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was Walt Disney's first animated feature. In 1937 it was considered extremely unlikely that people would want to sit through a full-length animated movie. FOR WHAT AGE IS SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS RECOMMENDED?
Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs is definitely a movie classic. However, that does not make it suitable for all children. It is, as Commonsense Media says, enchanting but scary. They recommend Snow White for children aged five years old and up. The Movie Mom, in her book The Movie Mom's Guide to Family Movies, also recommends this movie for children aged five and up.
In case you do not remember, the frightening parts include many with the wicked queen, when Snow White is in the enchanted forest, when she eats the apple and when the Queen transforms into a hag. Don't forget, the Queen actually orders the huntsman to kill Snow White and return with her heart. Take this information in before you show it to your very young children.
Some might even dislike the basic approach of Snow White, that of young lady content to stay home and clean house until her prince comes for her.
Finally, the movie does not have narrative and relies on the use of pages from the storybook to share details of the story. Non-readers will require someone to read for them.This film is a marvel, however, and boasts a beautifully remastered video and some of the most famous Walt Disney music of all time.

Ever wondered what a SteelBook is? I did and recently learned that a SteelBook Case is one that is similar to an ordinary disc case but which is made out of metal making it much more durable and more attractive as well. Some collectors even prefer the more substantial feel of a SteelBook case in their hand. Often the SteelBook version of the movie features different artwork (as this from Snow White does) and sometimes that artwork is even embossed or dressed up in some way. Ponyo, which is also known as Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea, is a Japanese film by Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli that was released in 2008 in Japan, 2009 in North America and 2010 in Great Britain. The story, which if you are reading this you likely already know, revolves around a goldfish named Ponyo and his friend, a young boy named Sousuke. The movie was a highly successful film both financially and critically and earned a lot of fans for both the film and the creators.

Oliver's Ghost aired originally on the Hallmark Channel, a Halloween movie in which a boy can see ghostly spirits. He moves to an old house in the suburbs where he can see the previous home owner's spirit and he and a neighbor work together to help free that spirit by having him let go of his earthly regrets, which allows the house and the family to resume normal living.

The Catching Fire Soundtrack
I read an AMAZING review of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire soundtrack and I believe that it appeals to all fans of the trilogy. Right now I'm listening to Coldplay's Atlas, which is the lead single from the soundtrack and perfectly simmers until it boils over...
Consequence of Sound called the soundtrack a nice curation. The Ottawa Citizen, my local newspaper, gave the soundtrack a very strong four stars and says, "There's no clear victor on this record, apart from the fan."
The movie soundtrack is available on CD or MP3. Note that there are two choices a regular edition and a deluxe edition though if you're going to buy this release, I'm not sure why any fan would settle for the first. You will find it here on Amazon.
The Limited Edition Poster Set
This set is a nice way to collect posters of your favorite characters from the movie. Included in this set of eight are Cato, Effie, Haymitch, Cinna, Gale, Katniss, Peeta and Rue. The Perfect Storm starts slowly but builds to a tragic ending, sharing the story of the fishing industry as well as the science of storm prediction. Learn about the people onboard the Andrea Gail who find themselves in the middle of the storm. This book shares interviews with those involved including survivors, families and rescue crews. As always, it is recommended that you read the book by Sebastian Junger before you watch the movie.
Twister is an older natural disaster movie worth watching. This thriller is packed with excitement and special effects. It tells the story of scientists following an extremely destructive weather system in Tornado Alley. Those scientists hope to learn more about tornadoes in order to develop a better early warning system.

Tornado movie is a made-for-television movie, which receives good marks. A storm chaser in Texas tries to guess when the twisters will strike. His meteorology professor has an invention which should prove helpful except they have to put it in the path of an oncoming twister. Definitely a race against mother nature.

Dante's Peak is beautifully set, which hides the fact that the town is located at the base of a dormant volcano. Of course, given that this is a natural disaster movie you can guess that the volcano is no longer dormant. Officials try to hush up the fact that there could be an eruption but soon it is impossible to hide the exploding volcano and it becomes a fight to leave town and survive.

Armageddon is definitely an action-adventure movie, this one about a meteor storm. NASA's director realizes that there are just 18 days before the earth will be hit and destroyed by a meteor that is the same size as Texas. It brings in a team of rough oil drillers to drop a nuclear warhead into the core of the meteorite. Amazon rightly calls this film a thrill ride.

Earthquake is an older movie about ordinary people who must face a natural disaster together. Located in Southern California, they struggle to survive a huge earthquake and its subsequent shock waves.
Featuring a noteworthy cast, including Charlton Heston, Ava Gardner, George Kennedy, Lorne Greene and Geneviève Bujold, this movie won Academy Awards for sound and special effects. I must say that, of the movies I have NOT seen on this page, this one perhaps intrigues me the most partly because of the cast and partly because of the Academy Awards.
