MICHAEL JACKSON'S VISION

MTV and Michael Jackson arrived on the North American scene at pretty much the same time and they were perfectly suited to each other. Jackson used MTV from the very beginning to share his visual style and his music where people could hear and see his music. He started thinking of his songs as scripts and created stories out of them and called them 'short films' rather than 'music videos.'

The first music video to be initiated into the Library of Congress National Film Registry was Michael Jackson's Thriller. That song had a huge impact at the time of its release. I remember staying home the night that video was released to watch it on television and being totally amazed by it.

Michael Jackson's Vision was released on November 22, 2010. It contains all 35 of Michael's videos that were created when he was working as a solo performer. Ten of them appear on DVD for the first time ever. The videos have been restored and remastered so that you will get the best audio and visual impact from them. It includes a bonus DVD with seven more videos with other artists that include The Jacksons performing "Enjoy Yourself," Paul McCartney performing "Say Say Say" and the video that had never been seen before, "One More Chance."

I was suitably impressed with the special other than the fact that I disliked the product placement. It was a fun show and it was intense. Jessie never gave up and that is what Combat Carl would advise you if you are ever in a difficult situation. If I had to complain, I would say only that it was too short. It was over before before we were ready for it to be over!

The movie was a highly successful film both financially and critically and earned a lot of fans for both the film and the creators.

The Peanut Butter Solution Blu-ray DVD Combo Release

Those who have long wanted to rewatch The Peanut Butter Solution will be pleased to discover that the 1985 movie has finally been released on DVD and Blu-ray disc.  For years, the only option for watching this movie was a very dated VHS videotape. A choice which, because of rarity, had become expensive and necessitated the owning of a VCR.

For fun, here's a peek at the movie the movie trailer:

It is a French Canadian release, which explains the confusing text on the cover. However, both the blu-ray and the DVD disc have a copy of the movie in English and in French so you can buy it knowing you will be able to view it in the language you prefer. Also included in the case is a small booklet with pictures from the movie. Unfortunately, the text within that booklet is only in French.

Fantastic Beasts Release Date on DVD & Blu-ray Disc

In my world Harry Potter fans were totally pleased with the movie  Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them when it was finally released in the movie theatres on November 18, 2016 and now there is another date to be excited about. I know that fans have been waiting and asking when will the DVD and Blu-ray disc for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them be released?

According to HDRoom, you will be able to start watching some versions of Fantastic Beasts at home on March 7, 2017 though they do not say which formats will be available on that date.  However, they go on to say that the release date for Digital HD, DVD, Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray versions is March 28, 2017, timed to coincide with a new Harry Potter 4K release.

The Cheaters (1945) Christmas Movie

THE CHEATERS TAGLINE 

"Delightful derelict! He's a Rogue...A King...Devil...Pauper...A Millionaire...WHO?" 

For the longest while, The Cheaters was a hard movie to find even on VHS videotape. To the relief of many, it was eventually released on DVD. However, I was not paying attention and it appears that even the DVD is hard to find now. I missed my opportunity. Did you?

The Cheaters is a 1945 movie directed by Joseph Kane that stars Joseph Schildkraut, Billie Burke and Eugene Pallette.

The story line is that of a rich family getting ready for Christmas and their decision to help a starving actor by feeding and sheltering him for the holidays. Wikipedia calls it a screwball comedy and the story line would indicate that it could be exactly that.

Leonard Maltin once said that this film features an "Excellent cast in an enjoyable tale of a wealthy family of snobs humanized by the downtrodden actor they invite for Christmas dinner."

Some consider it  a beloved Christmas film. Apparently, before A Christmas Carol, It's a Wonderful Life, White Christmas and a Christmas Story, this film was one that was shown regularly during the holidays.

The reading I have done indicates that it is probably a dark Christmas movie.  One of the lucky to snatch up a DVD copy and watch it in the last decade called it one of the "finest holiday films he's ever seen." That's a pretty strong recommendation, which makes me want to see this film even more.

Lego Star Wars: Droid Tales

NEARLY WORDLESS WEDNESDAY 

As a nearly wordless Wednesday post, I bring you this recent release, Lego Star Wars: Droid Tales. It perfectly combines the loves of many an adult and child. That is, Lego and Star Wars. The story is of a celebration in Endor (the Ewok village.) R2-D2 and C-3PO share with their human and non-human friends the adventures which led to The Phantom Menace. While they are sharing their story, there is a kidnapping and a whole new Star Wars story emerges. Scooby-Doo Where Are You The Complete Series DVD Collection

There was a time when my sons watched Scooby-Doo faithfully.  They were big enough fans of the series that when we accidentally stumbled across Velma, Daphne, Freddie and Shaggy last Christmas at Universal Studios in Florida there were smiles all around!

Game of Thrones: Third Season Release Date

Look what I found: The Game of Thrones: The Complete Third Season Limited Edition exclusive set.

I watched and often covered my eyes during the first season of the series and I have the second in the house waiting to be viewed and cringed at, LOL.  This is not a series that I would recommend for the faint of heart nor for the easily offended.  It contains a lot of violence and sex but obviously it does have a good story, which has hooked hoards of watchers. I read that the finale drew 5.4 million viewers.

This Season 3 set isn't even going to be available until February 18, 2014 but it is already available for pre-order on Amazon with Amazon's usual guarantee so you won't have to be worried about the price going down. This set will contain the blu-ray, DVD and digital versions of the movie. Of course, more basic sets will be available with just blu-ray or DVD discs. You will find all of the versions of season three that Amazon is offering click here. Too bad it will be too late for Christmas gift giving in  2013 but still a release that will be highly anticipated by many Game of Thrones fans with the blu-ray version likely highly recommended by blu-ray experts, too.

Most noteworthy this week in the way of new DVD and blu-ray releases, at least in terms of box office success, is definitely the latest James Bond movie, Skyfall.  Skyfall, although not considered perfect, faired pretty well with the expert reviewers and James Bond fans alike.  It, along with all of the new releases this week, will be available at Amazon and elsewhere on February 12, 2013.
Other new releases include The Perks of Being a Wallflower, starring Harry Potter's Emma Watson. While I haven't seen it, I know one of my son's friends enjoyed it enough to make it move onto my 19-year old son's must-see list.

A Disney film called Wreck-It Ralph appears for downloading only this week. If you want to own it on DVD and blu-ray disc you will have to wait until March 5 at which time and in typical Disney fashion, at that time you'll have various choices from the four-disc DVD, blu-ray and digital combination pack to a more simple and affordable DVD.

Called hilarious and heartwarming, the story of Robot and Frank is of a cat burglar who is being overtaken by dementia.  His children want to see him go into a nursing home but he winds up living with a robot who helps him cope with cleaning, cooking, etc. It sounds like an interesting film and is one I would like to see. (Robot and Frank is not available on blu-ray disc.)

The Sessions is a biopic that deals with the story of a poet and polio survivor, sexual intercourse and disabled people. It is apparently a story of optimism told with some humour. However, because of its content matter it is of course rated R and not a movie that I would choose to see lightly. Helen Hunt, who we haven't seen for awhile, plays the sex surrogate.

Peter Pan on Blu-ray and DVD

Many Peter Pan fans been asking for a very long time, "When will Peter Pan be released from the Vault?"

Their wait was finally over when, on February 5, 2013 the the sixtieth anniversary of the original release of Peter Pan, Disney released Peter Pan from the Vault again.  

As Disney says, “Now, for the first time ever, we’ll be able to see Disney’s Peter Pan in high definition. Never Land looks like it has never looked before.”   

Disney released three versions of Peter Pan, including the Diamond Edition blu-ray DVD combination with two discs in DVD or blu-ray packaging and a Diamond Edition with three discs that also includes a digital copy of the movie and a storybook application. 

I love that Disney created new cover artwork from the illustrations of Mary Blair for this release.

 

Mary Blair was an artist who created concept art for Peter Pan and for other Disney movies that included Alice in Wonderland, Song of theS outh and Cinderella.

 

I think this cover is absolutely stunning, particularly in the gold colored three-disc Diamond Edition version shown here. If it wasn’t so ridiculous, one might actually want to own two copies of the movie just to have both versions of the artwork.

 

As a matter of fact, I think this artwork is nice enough to grace the walls of a child’s bedroom or even my family room, but I digress!

Of course, the re-release of Peter Pan means that the movie has been digitally restored and the sound upgraded.

 

As always with Disney’s re-released movies, it includes a long list of more than FOUR HOURS of bonus features that includes a new song and previously deleted scenes.

Blu-ray.com calls this latest release of Peter Pan, "even more wondrous and magnificent" than the original. They say that the sound is strong and that the video is stunning although fans will note that it is slightly different than the original.

 

High-Def Digest says that Disney has done another marvelous job, that it looks and sounds fantastic and says, of course, that Disney fans MUST own it  but that for others it is most definitely HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
