Valentine's Day Gift Idea For Seniors: I Love Lucy Calendar

Normally, I would not choose to write a post about a 2015 calendar after the year had arrived but I cannot help but think that this is a great Valentine's Day gift idea for someone who remembers I Love Lucy fondly.

It's a practical, useful gift.

It's affordable and doesn't deliver unwanted calories.

It's even decorated for Valentine's Day with a red heart and the word love!

What more could you ask?

Well, for the right person, I think this I Love Lucy calendar might also happen to be a nostalgic gift. One that will be a trip down memory lane, which makes it a perfect gift idea for a senior citizen like the grandparents in your life.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Grantchester: A New Period Drama Mini-Series

I've only just started watching the new mini-series Grantchester but I will admit I have enjoyed the limited amount that I have seen so far and that I am hooked.

Grantchester is a period drama film, a whodunit with the tag line: Faith. Love. Murder.

It is a Masterpiece Mystery in which an Anglican vicar helps a local police detective solve mysteries. It is set near Cambridge in the 1950s and is based on the Grantchester Mysteries books written by James Runcie.

I am looking forward to following the adventures of Reverend Sidney Chambers (played by James Norton) and Detective Inspector Geordie Keating (played by Robson Green) and I hope the rest of the season is as good as the first episode.  I hope that it is not too presumptuous to say that I am glad to see that there will be a second season.

You can check Grantchester out for yourself via this short YouTube trailer:

Right now you can tune in to Grantchester on Sunday nights on whatever channel you watch Masterpiece productions on.  I see that the DVD and blu-ray versions of the mini-series are available for pre-order from Amazon by clicking right here, if you know already that you want to own a copy of the series for yourself or if you know someone for whom this would make a great gift idea. The official release date is April 7, 2015.

What do you think? Will you be tuning in to Grantchester?
Are you already hooked like I am?
Did the first episode make you want to read the books?

See you
at the movies!

Magic in the Moonlight Movie Review

Last night we watched MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT with Colin Firth and Emma Stone.

The story is that of a well known magician who dazzles audiences worldwide and his experiences when he discovers a real psychic or soothsayer.

The Guardian says, "Colin Firth and Emma Stone deliver fun and romantic whimsy in Woody Allen’s latest, but nothing memorable" and I agree. Magic in the Moonlight was okay, not great, though I loved the magic, the fabulous costumes and the setting of the French Riviera in the 1920s.

I would love to visit that time and that place. Imagine driving through the countryside of France in a convertible in the summertime.  What could be better?

Here's a peek at the movie via the movie trailer:

I think I would recommend this movie if you love romantic comedies and you love period pieces.  It might actually be worth watching just for the Roaring Twenties and the Jazz Age aspect, if that time period intrigues you. It's not the best-ever movie from those genres but it is a beautiful movie.

Magic in the Moonlight is rated PG-13 and overall I think that it is pretty inoffensive for an adult. There's little swearing, no sex though some kissing. There's smoking and drinking as there would have been in the 1920s and there is also the subject of whether or not there is a God and an afterlife.

Have you seen it? Will you be adding Magic in the Moonlight to your movie list?

See you
at the movies!

Disney's Frozen Chapter Books

We no longer have young children around our house but I remember well how much they embraced early chapter books when they were learning to read. My guys were keen on the Magic Tree House, The Bailey School Kids and Puppy Tales by Jenny Dale to name a few so when I saw these Frozen-themed books I was excited for little girls that love Disney's Frozen.

Take a popular movie like this one and turn it into an early chapter book for children aged 6 to 9 or in grades 1 through 4 and you are bound to capture even the most reluctant reader's attention.

The Stepping Stone series is called Anna and Elsa: Sisterhood is the Strongest Magic and so far, I see three titles: All Hail the Queen, Memory and Magic and A Warm Welcome. Hopefully, the books will be very successful and Disney will release more titles.

I also like the idea that they are hardcover books, which means that if they become treasured volumes they will last longer and possibly even be held forever as part of a little girl's childhood book collection and even though they are hardcover books, they are not expensive retailing at less than $10 on Amazon.  You can learn more about them on Amazon yourself by clicking here.

What do you think? Is it a good idea to tie in popular movies with children's books or would you rather they be two totally different worlds?

Downton Abbey Christmas Video Parodies

I have only just stumbled upon the Downton Abbey Christmas Text for Santa video series and thought you might have missed it, too.  If you did, you are in for a treat. If you have already seen it you can, of course, enjoy it again.

The series is a two-part series, an effort on behalf of the cast and crew of Downton to raise funds for a Christmas charity called Text Santa in the United Kingdom.

You'll find the regular cast of characters in their usual roles but it is a parody video so you will also find them out of character. If you are open minded and you love the television series, you are likely going to laugh out loud.

You will find a few special guest stars. I would tell you who makes an appearance in the two videos but that would definitely qualify as a spoiler so I'll let you see for yourself:

What did you think? Did you laugh out loud? I did! And I'm still smiling when I return and rewatch these videos years later!

See you
at the movies!
