The Rum Diary Movie Review
Johnny Depp starred in the intriguing drama movie called The Rum Diary, which was based on the book of the same name by Hunter S. Thompson, was set and filmed in San Juan, Puerto Rico and was released on October 28, 2009. It also starred Amber Heard, Aaron Eckhart, Giovanni Ribisi, Richard Jenkins, Amaury Nolasco, Michael Rispoli and Marshall Bell.
The story is that of an American journalist who grows tired of life in New York in the late 1950s and accepts a writing job in Puerto Rico for the newspaper there. Soon he is living the life of the 1950s. He meets an attractive American woman and her fiance who is involved in a questionable property development scheme. He eventually finds his writing voice and his integrity...
The Telegraph said, "This is a film about lunacy without the fizz of a lunatic at its heart."
Cinematic Corner said, "...it's still a very entertaining and funny ride. And there is plenty of crazy situations and drunken haze in it."
The Rum Diary is another Depp movie that was highly anticipated and with which I was disappointed. However, my disappointment stemmed from the subject matter of the film, which was grittier than I like and rated R, and not because of Johnny Depp's performance.
Watch the movie trailer here and you will quickly see how gritty this film is.
If you think you might like the movie or you want to check it out anyway, you might also consider reading the book by Hunter S. Thompson. It was written in 1959 but only published more recently in 1998. Amazon says that the story is a high paced and exciting one and the characters are "violent, maniacal and alcoholic." Definitely an interesting look back into the 1950s, Puerto Rico and journalism.

Johnny Depp as Mortdecai
I cannot wait for Johnny Depp to THRILL me and to DAZZLE me again. That is, Johnny Depp as the Honourable Charlie Mortdecai.
Purveyor of fine art.
Lovable scoundrel.
Part-time rogue.
And NO, he does NOT need help with his bags.
Johnny Depp as a secret agent? You bet! In this action film he will be joined by a talented lineup that includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor, Olivia Munn and Paul Bettany.
Meanwhile there are not one but TWO trailers to hold us over until the movie is released on February 6, 2015. Take a peek for yourself:
Mortdecai's mind is his weapon... His mission? The world!
Looks like a fun romp to me starring one of my all-time favourite celebrities.
I hope the music in the movie is as fun as the music in the trailers!
So, what do you think? To Mortdecai or not to Mortdecai?

Disney's The Lone Ranger Movie Review
Recently, on my rounds as an ebay seller, I picked The Lone Ranger blu-ray disc up at a consignment store figuring that I would be able to check out the movie and then sell it to earn some if not all of my money back.
But hey, I was surprised that the movie was such a fun romp. Once we stopped wanting it to be like something we thought it should be it was a hoot. It was way over the top and often ridiculous and unbelievable but it was funny and, by the end, I was really enjoying it.
Here's a peek at the movie via the official Disney movie trailer:
Be aware that despite the fact this movie was made by Disney, it is PG-13 and, as Matt Zoller Seitz of Roger Ebert's website says, "it is all at once violent and sweet, clever and goofy." I agree and it is definitely not appropriate for children.
Blu-ray.com has praise for the blu-ray version, saying that it lives up to expectations of video and audio but that they wish there had been more special features. I enjoyed the following comment that blu-ray.com made about the movie, "There's some dark Looney Tunes-esque fun to be had, especially between Hammer and Depp, so long as you're willing to switch off the critical portions of your brain, you might just be able to enjoy the movie on its own terms." I agree totally with that comment, too.
Noteworthy, the Ebert reviewer thinks this movie may eventually be called "misunderstood." I guess only time will tell.
Would I recommend it? I do think so, with the above comments kept in mind. It's a fun movie just take it as such and don't expect too much.

The Obama's Alice in Wonderland White House Halloween Party
According to this morning's newspaper, Tim Burton and Johnny Depp were amongst those involved in a special Alice in Wonderland themed Halloween party thrown by the White House in 2009.
Johnny Depp appeared in the costume that he wore as the Mad Hatter in the movie Alice in Wonderland.
Tim Burton was responsible for the dining room, which was decorated in true Mad Hatter style.
Chewbacca of Star Wars fame made a special appearance as well.
The event was attended by both Malia and Sasha Obama, their friends, children of the White House staff and of military families.
The newspaper said that the White House did not allow the press to report on the party for fear of how such a splashy Hollywood style party would look to those Americans struggling to find jobs and put food on the table for their families.
According to sources online, the upcoming biography, The Obamas, by Jodi Kantor claims that the trick-or-treating event was publicized and that the Alice in Wonderland party was not.
The White House, however, is denying that they tried to keep the party quiet saying that they invited the press corps, that there were pictures posted on Flickr, as well as a video on the White House site and that the event was even talked about on Johnny Depp's website.
Curious and curiouser! It must have been quite a party one about which we may never know the truth...but we surely recognize a good story when we see one. Would you like to have Johnny Depp make an appearance at YOUR Alice in Wonderland Party? I would!

Johnny Depp in The Man Who Cried (2001) Movie Review

The Man Who Cried is a 2001 film with an all-star cast that includes Christina Ricci, Cate Blanchett, John Turturro and Johnny Depp. If you enjoy Johnny Depp, you will definitely want to see this movie, even though he is not the main character. He may not have been the main character but he was definitely unforgettable in this bittersweet film and I thought he even came close to stealing the show.
The Man Who Cried starts out in 1927 in a small Russian village with a young girl who becomes separated from her family and winds up raised in England by an English family. As a singer and dancer, she winds up in living in Paris where she is increasingly unsafe as the Nazi Germans gain strength.
Throw into the story an unscrupulous operatic tenor, a cabaret dancer and a mysterious gypsy stranger and you have a beautifully done movie, an “alluring tale of passion, intrigue and betrayal.”
I loved it, though I see by mixed reviews online, which means that this movie is not for everyone. If you love Johnny Depp and you enjoy romantic movies with a historic bent, you should enjoy The Man Who Cried.
I watched it on an old VHS tape and wished for better because the film was beautiful and I found myself imagining how lovely it would be if it were cleaned up on blu-ray disc. However, it turns out that The Man Who Cried is not available on blu-ray. It is, of course, available on DVD from Amazon by clicking right here.

The Five Best Johnny Depp Movies.
The Last Oprah Winfrey Show
Thirteen thousand people attended an event called Surprise Oprah! A Farewell Spectacular last Tuesday for the filming of the final show in Chicago, which, by the way, is where Oprah's show had its humble beginnings.
The celebration included a look back at the last 25 years of Oprah's show and included the likes of Will Smith, Tom Cruise, Beyonce, Katie Holmes, Maria Shriver and Halle Berry.
I have not been following the prolonged goodbye season but I did manage to see the show on which Johnny Depp made his appearance. He toasted Oprah and gave the audience a most unique gift -- the world premiere of the new Pirates of the Caribbean on Stranger Tides movie AND he attended with them. (That is one Oprah Winfrey gift I would have received.)
The last show? It airs this Wednesday, May 25th, 2011 and might be an interesting one to check out if only so that you can say you saw THE LAST OPRAH WINFREY SHOW.

A Johnny Depp Magazine For Valentine's Day? Why Not?
Johnny Depp for Valentine's Day? Sure why not, after all I received him from Santa Claus in my Christmas stocking.
If you are planning on spending $5 or more on a greeting card why not consider greeting her with a wonderful Johnny Depp picture on the cover of a magazine!
I cannot imagine a better Valentine's Day card than an issue of a magazine 'starring' Johnny Depp. Not only would I have one of the best Johnny Depp pictures available to add to my collection, but I would also have some great reading material. (I don't actually have a collection unless you count my movies but I am off to a great start with the January 2011 edition of Vanity Fair that Santa gave me.)
How about you? If you are looking for a unique Valentine's Day gift, consider the gift of Depp...
You might also consider a romantic movie starring Mr. Depp. The movie Chocolat is one of my favorite romantic movies, available on blu-ray, and just happens to star one of my favorite actors... If you have not seen Chocolat, do so. The book by Joanne Harris is pretty darn good, too. Find the Chocolat movie on blu-ray and DVD here on Amazon.

Best Johnny Depp Movies?
The best Johnny Depp movie is a subject open for debate. My favorites are different than yours, and yours are different than your sister's...so I turned, as I often do, to the best movie lists provided by Amazon customer reviews and the result is an interesting movie list.
In my reading, I discovered that there are more than a couple of Johnny Dep's movies that I have yet to see that his work really does cross many movie genres. I also discovered that most of his movies are available on Blu-ray.
My favorite Johnny Depp movie still is Chocolat and I know I have written about it time and time again. Now it is your turn...do you enjoy Johnny Depp movies? If so, what is YOUR favorite Johnny Depp movie and why?

Entertainment Weekly's Johnny Depp & Angelina Jolie The Tourist Cover
Love Johnny Depp? How about Angelina Jolie? If so, then you will love the cover of the November 19th Holiday Movie Preview issue of Entertainment Weekly and if you hadn't already been planning to see the movie, seeing this handsome pair on the cover might just convince you to put their new movie on your watch list.
The Tourist opens in North American movie theatres on December 10th, 2010. I'm a bit disappointed with the timing of the release because I would rather see a Christmas movie at that time in December. However, I'll have to see if I can find time in my holiday schedule to take a holiday of another sort in Italy with Depp and Jolie in The Tourist.
What do you think of this cover? Is it enough to make you want to see The Tourist? Or is the presence of two of the biggest movie stars of our times enough to make this movie a must see?

Anthony Zimmer, The Original The Tourist Movie
The Tourist, which comes to North American theatres on December 10, 2010, and which stars Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, is a remake of a French movie called Anthony Zimmer.
The stories in the two movies are parallel.
In Anthony Zimmer and in The Tourist, the Paris police and Russian Mafia are both on the lookout for Anthony Zimmer who is responsible for laundering money in France. It turns out that Zimmer can only be located through his mistress so she befriends another gentlemen to draw attention away from her lover.
Anthony Zimmer, which is in French and features English subtitles, was not widely distributed, possibly because of the U.S. studio buying the rights for a remake, but one of the few Amazon customer reviews calls Anthony Zimmer a beautiful story with lots of style, beautiful locations and good performances. If The Tourist turns that much in, I will be satisfied. Order your copy from Amazon of Anthony Zimmer by clicking right here.

Chocolat: A Book and Movie Gift Idea For Mom
Mother's Day is quickly approaching and I'd like to recommend a fabulous gift set in the form of Chocolat, the movie and the book. Chocolat is on my list of my favorite movies and I loved the book, too. I think they are perfect for Mom on Mother's Day.
The book was written by Joanne Harris and was Joanne Harris’ first novel. It tells the story of a chocolate maker who arrives in a quiet French village with her young daughter and proceeds to weave her magic on the local villagers. However, her bonbons, cocoa and patisserie are not welcomed by all and the she must struggle to win friends and supporters.
The movie, of course, is also delicious whether enjoyed in DVD or Blu-ray form. It is a film from the year 2000 that was directed by Lasse Hallstrom and starred Juliette Binoche, Johnny Depp and Judi Dench. It received five Academy Award nominations including Best Actress, Best Picture, Best Original Music, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress. Any female Johnny Depp fan will love this movie.
Many times you either love the movie OR the book, but this time, you can savor them both. The book and the movie would make a wonderful gift set for Mom or any woman who loves a beautiful story. Of course, it would be a bit tastier if you added just a wee bit of chocolate, too!

The New Alice in Wonderland Movie Review
What a day! One packed with movies including the new Alice in Wonderland movie by Tim Burton. My 16-year old son and I spent quite a lot of time discussing it afterward. I decided I was not ready to commit my thoughts to paper yet but I did want to give you a taste of what I am thinking.
While Tim Burton's Alice may not have been the best-ever movie that I have seen and it will not unfortunately make my new My Favorite Movie List, it was entertaining and WOW it was beautiful. The scenery was amazing and I, as always, loved Johnny Depp.
If you are wondering whether or not to watch 3D or 2D, I would say try 2D. That is the way Tim Burton originally shot it and I am not really sure that the 3D version added much to the already magnificent visuals of this movie.
I look forward to hearing what YOU think about this movie.

Tim Burton's New Alice in Wonderland Movie Reviews
I have to admit that it is killing me and so I went looking for a new Alice movie review or two and here is what I discovered...
Rotten Tomatoes has it rated at a pretty low 56 percent, with the opinion being that Tim Burton has given up the heart of the Alice in Wonderland story for a visual treat.
I enjoyed the review a bit more at The Daily You, even though it was not as flattering as I wished it to be. Their summary of Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland might be that the story doesn't quite live up to the eye candy.
Screen Crave was a little more positive giving the film a 7.5 and saying that the acting, music and visuals were good but that the story is the same. (In my mind, that part is good, I did not expect anything too different on the story front although I understand that this Alice is older than the one we normally know.)
I liked the Blog Critics new Alice movie review because it gives us reason to hope that yes, we might actually like this film. It says that this film will live up to our expectations.
If you are wondering about the appropriateness of this film for your children, you might like to know that The Christian Science Monitor calls the movie PG citing "fantasy action and violence involving scary images and situations, and for a smoking caterpillar."
And finally, the word from one of my absolute favorite online movie reviewers, Nell Minnow, who writes as The Movie Mom on Beliefnet. She recommends the movie for children aged Grade 4 and up and she gives the issues in the film a more thorough description when she says that this film features "some grotesque and scary images including monsters with lots of teeth, wounds, and severed monster head, gouged eye, fantasy violence including chases, swords, punching and beheading." Definitely good reasons NOT to take your young children to see this version of Alice in Wonderland. Oh, and she grades the movie, too, with a B+ which makes me smile. I have been trusting the Movie Mom's opinions for well over 10 years and now, once again, I feel like there is still hope for this much anticipated movie.
Am I going to see Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland at the movie theatre? You bet I am! Meanwhile, I would love to hear if you are planning on seeing it or, if you have already seen it, what you thought of it.
See you
in Wonderland!

Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland Movie Merchandise
What does Disney do best? Make movies? Maybe, but they also do a phenomenal job of creating movie merchandise. Unsurprisingly, they are the world’s LARGEST licensor of consumer products.
Eventually, I will be writing a review about Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland but right now I am intrigued by the merchandising since we all know that movie merchandise seems to be almost as important as the movie itself these days.
With Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, Disney has chosen to go after the 12 to 34 year old age bracket. Disney already has the princesses of the younger generation sold and they know that this new age group is a tough demographic to sell to. Disney is trying to set up 'Alice' as the adult version of 'Disney Princess.'
The merchandise available for this movie includes some more unusual home decor, apparel, designer accessories and jewelry by the likes of Swarovski, Stella McCartney, Sue Wong, Avril Lavigne plus collectible figurines and even a tea set. Of course, there are also the more ordinary or usual merchandise items like CDs, books and video games.
Since the original Alice in Wonderland is out of copyright there is likely also to be unofficial product available too, like the Versace handbags I have read about which feature the White Rabbit. (I wouldn't mind seeing one of those; I could not actually find any reference to them online. Although Alice in Wonderland is said to have inspired Versace's 2010 spring fashion line.) At least Disney's official products should bring merchandise of a consistent quality.
In terms of marketing, Disney has to walk a fine line here as the danger in this age bracket is very real of turning the fans off with too much merchandise. This age group likes things to be on the fringe and if the merchandising is too mainstream it won't be cool enough for them anymore.
Can Disney convince 12 to 34 year old women to buy into Alice? Perhaps they can, especially with Tim Burton involved. And never forget the draw of Johnny Depp...
People ARE talking about this movie and they ARE shopping. Disney has definitely done something right.
