Harry Potter fans know well the significance of the Golden Snitch and likely carry an image in their minds that it looks something like the Snitch shown in this photograph. A Snitch is a living, golden sphere with wings that measures approximately the same size as a walnut.  In the Harry Potter books and movies, the Snitch flies all over the Quidditch field trying to avoid capture. When caught, he is worth 150 points and with his capture, the game is over.

In the real world or muggle version of Quidditch the Snitch is actually an individual, usually dressed in golden yellow who is fast, agile and entertaining. His (or her) capture also signals the end of the game.

Read all about it! Read all about it! There's a new version of the book Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets being published and it is to be an illustrated edition. It is the second in the Harry Potter series to be done as an illustrated version featuring the artwork of Jim Kay.

This book will feature 115 new pictures. The front cover features the iconic Weasley Ford Anglia, a car we have all come to know and love because of the part it played in the book series. Inside the new book, you will find potato-headed gnomes, Hogwarts at night and an amazing portrait of Rubeus Hagrid. It will be published in an amazing 21 languages, testament to the continued popularity of the boy who lived.

Obviously, I haven't seen the new book yet but I know without seeing it that it will make a great gift for someone you want to introduce to the Harry Potter series. Lego Harry Potter Motorized Hogwarts Express Train Set (10132)

RECREATE A PART OF HARRY POTTER'S WORLD 

My family was fortunate enough to own a few of the Harry Potter sets but of course we missed many of them like this discontinued and now rare and hard-to-find Hogwarts Express motorized train set from 2004. It is a 544 piece set, recommended for individuals aged 10 and up that works with other Lego train sets and it includes four mini-figures - Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Professor Lupin and a Dementor. 

The first 30 seconds of this video shows the real train that was used in the film to recreate J.K. Rowling's and Harry Potter's Hogwarts Express. It will come as no surprise that they chose one of the most spectacular railroad journeys in the world for the Harry Potter movies.

Unfortunately, now that Lego's Harry Potter Motorized Hogwarts Express is discontinued, you will find that the price has gone up. Wizarding World Harry Potter Trivial Pursuit Board Game by Hasbro

How exciting! A new Harry Potter game and just when I thought we might not see any new Harry Potter merchandise options.

This game is a Harry Potter version of Trivial Pursuit. If you know what the old versions of Trivial Pursuit looked like, you will realize quickly that this one is different. That is because it is a travel game and therefore, it does not have a board like the one we would previously have seen in a Trivial Pursuit game.

In any case, fans are clamouring for this new game that will test their knowledge of Harry Potter and his wizarding world. The topics on the cards include The Dark Arts, Hogwarts, Magical Spells and Potions, Magical Objects, Magical People and Animals and Magical Creatures.

It is a great gift idea for the Harry Potter geek in your family. Not only does it sound like fun for those who have knowledge of the books and movies but it is also affordable, retailing on Amazon right now for less than $20.

Read all about it! Read all about it! There's a new version of the book Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone being published and it is to be an illustrated edition with images by artist Jim Kay.

Apparently, all of the Harry Potter books will be re-released as illustrated books and author J.K. Rowling personally picked Kay to create the artwork.

Remember Harry’s early years when he resided with his not-very-nice aunt and uncle and horrible cousin Dudley? When Harry slept in a small closet under the stairs…

I can hardly wait to see Kay's vision of Harry Potter's world.  To keep you going, here are a few of the pictures from the book from Amazon, starting with the exterior of Hogwarts Castle:

Followed by Draco Malfoy, Hagrid and Hermione Granger.  I think the cover is exciting but my favorite image is the one of Hermione, in part because of the handsome antique door behind her but also because she manages to look like Hermione without looking like Emma Watson.  Which picture is your favorite?

Every true Harry Potter geek should own one of these Christmas stockings to hang on the mantle at Christmas time.

This Christmas stocking is a velvet one that was originally sold by Warner Brothers. It is a classic red stocking with braided gold trim. It features a moon and stars, a purple wizarding hat, a hanging loop and tassels.

J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter Chair Auction

J.K. Rowling's chair, the one she used when she wrote two of the Harry Potter books, is going up for auction at Heritage Auctions in New York City on April 6, 2016.

I agree with the Heritage Auction's representative when he says that this chair deserves to be enshrined somewhere. Any fan of the Harry Potter books would love to own this chair because of the connection to the author.

The chair comes with a letter of authenticity from J.K. Rowling attesting to the fact that she used this chair to write the first drafts of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

If you are interested, you can bid online, via the post or on the telephone.  Learn more at Heritage auctions here. However, you might need really deep pockets or a bit of wizard magic as The Telegraph says that this chair is expected to fetch $45,000.  Not an easy price for most of us mere mortals.

If that price is out of your reach and you are at all artistic, why not recreate this chair for yourself? 1930s era oak dining chairs like this one are readily and affordably available and the work requires only a piece of burlap, some paint and imagination. Just make sure that you choose a sturdy chair that does not require any structural repairs and beware that although Rowling wrote the books in this chair, it is not a comfortable one. I found lots of similar vintage and antique chairs on eBay that would work for your project.

Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Movie Trailer

Are you anxious for the new Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows or even just for a wee bit of advance information about the movie? Are you watching for the movie trailer? Wait no more, for here it is and it looks dark and brooding and exciting. 

Were you aware that The Deathly Hallows will be in two parts? The first part will be released in November, 2010 and the second part in July, 2011.

When finally we are able to view this movie at the movie theatre, we will have the choice of seeing Harry Potter in three formats as the movie is being released in 2D, 3D and Imax 3D.  That will, of course, eventually mean one more 3D blu-ray movie available for those who have invested in 3D HDTV and 3D blu-ray players.

Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them Movie Review

Kudos to J.K. Rowling and all of the folks at Warner Brothers who brought to life Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them on the big screen in November of 2016.  I went to the movie with trepidation. Would this new movie live up to the expectation of the fans and the reputation of the Harry Potter series books and movies?  I should not have worried; I totally enjoyed the movie. I don't often want to revisit a movie especially immediately after the fact but this is one that I could easily go and see again right away and I am betting that many fans feel the same way.  Fantastic Beasts really was that good.

The movie left me wondering if someone who was not plugged into the Harry Potter franchise would enjoy it as much as the rest of us did and I am not sure. Newcomers might but they definitely would not understand all of the insider references.  Since there are four more Fantastic Beasts movies to come, if you are keen and unacquainted, you might want to go back and read the Harry Potter books and then watch the movies.

Highlights for me were many but I know I laughed out loud quite a few times. I came away wanting some Gigglewater and a certain special umbrella for Christmas.  Gigglewater is a wizarding alcoholic beverage that may cause you to laugh out loud when you drink it though apparently it is a real term from the 1920s.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is an enjoyable film, well done, that sets us up for four more stories.  Eddie Redmayne is outstanding as Newt Scamander, Dan Fogler is a good pairing as the no-maj Jacob Kowalski and Colin Farrell is good when he appears as Percival Graves, Director of Magical Security.  I also particularly enjoyed the sister characters, Porpentina Goldstein as played by Katherine Waterston and Queenie Goldstein as played by Alison Sudol.

MOVIE RATING

Fantastic Beasts is rated PG13. The Movie Mom says that it is given that rating based on fantasy action violence and she recommends it for middle school aged children. I think that is reasonable and this movie comes HIGHLY RECOMMENDED by me particularly if you are involved in Harry Potter's world.
